You are here :
There are many web sites dealing with genealogical matters, some of the ones I have found useful are listed below. Census returns are now available online. Apart from the 1881 Census, maintained by  familysearch.org, most require registration and payment  for downloading census images. Ancestry.co.uk has census returns from 1851, 1861,1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 for England and Wales. If you have a lot of research to do it can pay to take out an annual subscription.

The primary source for Births, Marriages and Deaths registrations is the 1837online web site. This site allows you to search BMD indexes from 1837, in addition Census records from 1861 have been added. Again there is a charge when you need to download an index page. This site also links to the ONS site that allows you to order certificates online. You will need the registration district, volume number and page number to use the £7 per certificate service.

A free service is provided by FreeUKGEN which covers Census returns, Civil registration and Parish registers. However this site is still having records added so is not complete, but can be a  useful starting point.

The GENUKI site provides a useful source for general genealogical research. Also Cyndi’s List is an excellent starting point if you are looking for Internet sources of genealogical information. There are also a number of sites which provide access to scanned historical information and trade directories. First World War medal records are available from the National Archives, Documents Online section.
If you are interested in the origin of surnames then  the recently Surname Profiler web site will be of special interest.  Another site of general interest is the Vision of Britain web site which provides an interesting historical perspective of Britain since 1801.

There are web sites which are specific  to Scottish records, in particular, scotlandspeople.gov.uk.  This site now has Scottish Census returns from 1861.

There are now many web sites that can supply family tree software data as well as census returns, historical directories, National Burial Index and Parish records on CD.

The Genes Reunited web site offers family tree building with matching to other trees, it currently has more than 80,000,000 names.
