Welcome to Rothesay on the Isle of Bute

The Isle of Bute lies in the Firth of Clyde, in the shelter of the Argyll mainland and dominated to the south by the rugged mountains of the Island of Arran.

The island is steeped in history, dating back to long before the Vikings, who frequently raided the island. There are standing stones, the 1000 year old  castle in the middle of the town, St Blane's chapel and ancient burial chambers in the woodland near Ettrick Bay.

The beaches are second to none; you can find sandy beaches and others with pebbles or shingle. Ettrick Bay has a sandy beach and a cafe. Scalpsie Bay also has a fine beach and a large colony of seals. They don’t seem to mind visitors and can be closely observed. A favourite with children!

The island is surrounded by coves, some with caves, some rocky, but all charming and worth exploring. People come to the island to visit the sights, relax, go walking, or follow sporting pursuits. Bute has 3 Golf courses, 4 lochs for fishing, bicycle hire, horse riding facilities and sea fishing opportunities. There are plenty of restaurants and pubs, supermarkets and shops for all your holiday needs.

There is a public swimming pool with sauna and fitness facilities. Bute has its own creamery, where visitors can observe the process of cheese- making and purchase the island cheese. There are several special events each year on the island (Jazz Festival, Highland Games, Folk Festival and others).

Our self catering flat, providing accommodation for up to 5 people, is located in the heart of Rothesay's conservation area, and provides the ideal base to allow you explore this beautiful island.
