Pure class, the best band I've heard and seen live this year.

ALBUM REVIEW, 24-7 MAGAZINE - 01 DECEMBER 2009

The problem with constructing a sound that strives to be awkward, wayward and forward thinking all at the same time is that things can get a little detached at times. Not so with Plymouth's Arthur Walker. Sure, their debut album is a sprawling mass of mutating time signatures, frazzled new-wave passions and nervous Cardiacs energy, but the likes of 'My Headphone Attracts' reveal that the band are just as adept at penning passages of melodic pop brilliance. 4 stars out of 5.

ALBUM REVIEW, BEAT SURRENDER - 10 NOVEMBER 2009

Arthur Walker have got some interesting stuff going on throughout their debut album Animal Nights (out now on DBS Music). Slightly angular, yet with an ear for a tune, Arthur Walker seem to inherit a British sounding cross between Guided By Voices and The Strokes and do it with some aplomb, particularly on tracks like Angels And Lines, My Headphone Attracts and Your Great Super Arm. A promising debut.

ALBUM REVIEW, ALLGIGS.CO.UK - 05 NOVEMBER 2009

This Plymouth alt-rock outfit have been shaking up the local scene for some time now. Often compared to The Pixies and in some cases The Artic Monkeys, their brand of disjointed edgy rock is pulling in attention across the board. The trendy music mags will probably drool over them. Certain DJs will certainly tracklist them, so their future is in the hands of the gods. One thing's for sure, at some stage they'll be at Glasto, and doing rather well. I bet they're a hot live band too....
SPIRITED DEBUT ALBUM FROM CLEVER PLYMOUTH ROCKERS - ALBUM REVIEW, 02 NOVEMBER 2009

With enough power, energy and originality to fuel them into the most promising of futures, Arthur Walker are destined to stir the attention of many from this point onwards. They are exciting front-runners of “new bands” on the block - standing out, quite considerably, from the efforts of their rivals. Described as the kind of band worthy of inclusion in the “Ones To Watch” lists of the music press, they have already garnered a healthy following through their two EP releases and are in no danger of having their debut album overlooked.....

ARTHUR WALKER LAUNCH DEBUT ALBUM ANIMAL NIGHTS - INTERVIEW, 15 OCTOBER 2009

One of the city’s most exciting altenative rock bands, Arthur Walker, are about to unleash their eagerly anticipated debut album on October 19. Animal Nights is the culmination of a year’s hard graft at Plymouth’s Deep Blue studio, showcasing their brilliant, life-affirming experimental rock punk. That the album oozes musicality and exudes such wonderfully off-kilter rock riffage with impossibly intricate rhythms is no surprise when you discover that main songwriter Steven Stones studied contemporary composition at Bath Spa. “I was going to major in trumpet performance as that was my instrument,” explains Steven.

LIVE REVIEW - 24-7 MAGAZINE MARCH 30, 2009

"Artful screechathons, tempered with brisk Futureheads-like choruses"

BBC 6MUSIC - INTRODUCING WITH TOM ROBINSON, JANUARY 2008
'I AM A SKULL AND I AM EVIL' BROADCAST ON NATIONAL RADIO

Can you imagine what ['I am a Skull and I am Evil'] would be like live, in a venue, if you were just standing at the front when they put on a performance like that! Arthur Walker are a fantastic combo from Plymouth, with a winning line in angular Pixies-esque pop. I am a Skull and I am Evil - no mild boast there!
24-7 MAGAZINE , DECEMBER 2007
EP REVIEW - SURE FIRE WINNER FROM A BAND THAT IS TRULY GOING PLACES

Whether they know (and like) it or not, the first two songs on ARTHUR WALKER’s new demo sound like Adam & The Ants circa-’Dirk Wears White Sox’. It’s no bad thing, especially as the Plymouth quartet have the suss to spike it with modern indie-pop crunch. Casting out more frantic hooks than a hyperactive angler, ‘My Headphone Attracts’ is all spastic groove and nu-wave energy, while the equally jittery ‘Extinguisher Glue’ never loses sight of its melodic Pixies-esque nucleus. Last song, and demo title, ‘I Am A Skull And I Am Evil’, weaves a memorably flash chorus into the fray and climaxes with all the vim and vigour of a bona fide, rock’n’roll anthem. All told, another sure-fire winner from a band who are truly going places.

PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF SOUTH DEVON
LIVE REVIEW. THE JUNCTION. FRIDAY 7 AUG 2007

Ah yes, Arthur Walker. It’s always difficult to know what to say about them. The thing is, they try so bloody hard to be a ’great’ and ‘important’ band, they’re gonna get there sooner or later by sheer force of will. Tonight, Arthur Walker probably turned in their best performance to date.......

THE HERALD, AUGUST 2007. COVER STORY / INTERVIEW
ARTHUR WALKER PUTS IT ON RECORD

It might sound more like the name of someone’s favourite uncle, but in fact Arthur Walker is the moniker of one of Plymouth’s newest and most exciting alternative rock bands, who will be launching their new EP at The Hub on Friday 17 August. The band who recently delivered an excellent set at the Maker Sunshine named themselves after a song, that inspired lead singer Steven Stones.....
24-7 MAGAZINE. MAY 2007. LIVE REVIEW

"The winners of this month’s Best Newcomers to Backbone’s Column Award are ARTHUR WALKER whose disjointed new-wavery stuffed with lofty yet warm melodies made for the kind of band that everyone couldn’t help but admire, and the kind of band that music mags pour over in their ‘Ones To Watch’ sections. Ones to watch, then."
THE FLY MAGAZINE. APRIL 2007

"One of the most exhilarating and dynamic bands to come out of Devon in recent years, Arthur Walker deserve your full attention. This Plymouth based alt-rock quartet are a real force to be reckoned with on stage and they have got a CD that is nothing short of brilliant to back it up."
24-7 MAGAZINE. MARCH 2007. DEMO REVIEWS

"Aiming to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with their influences, Plymouth Quartet ARTHUR WALKER are a gutsy proposition. On their 'Hello Medicine' demo, they eschew the obvious in favour of delightful yet chunky off-beats and slightly wonky post-punk manoeuvres, where songs like 'Molestation' and the title track are shot through with dextrous playing, well-observed harmonies and a big dollop of personality. They certainly bring a heap of innovation to an already assured display. Bravo. (Backbone)
