In 1850, when James married Clara Tunks, both he and his father were Whitesmiths (tinsmith, polisher or finisher of metal goods), the family living in Charles Street, Worcester.

The identification of who Mary was is uncertain at present. Two possible marriages occurred in Worcester between a James Bayliss and a Mary - Mary Allen on 30 Jan 1824 and Mary Salter on 22 Jan 1827.
