NOTES
William AT was a Thames bargemaster up until the start of WW1 when he became employed as a seaman at HM Chatham Docks.
Ernest followed his father and was also a Thames bargemaster. He worked for the Rochester Trading Co. at Strood, skippering Daisy Little, HT Wills and Bobs. He was living at 32 North St when he married
Emily and her husband Henry are known to have been in India at sometime with William C and his wife Sarah.
William C also started his working life on the barges with his father. On 18th Aug 1914 the barge arrived at Ipswich and the WW1 recruitment drive was in progress. He decided to enlist there and became part of the Suffolk Regiment (normally a man would have joined the regiment from the county he was living in). He went to France in May 1915, was shot in the leg in May 1917 and returned home, got frostbite in Jan 1918 and lost the 2nd toe on both feet. He was also wounded in the knuckle during a bayonet charge at sometime.
A couple of days after returning home with frostbite he was transferred to the Royal Tank Corps, but was discharged in Dec 1918 with diptherial paralysis. However he re-enlisted in the RTC in Aug 1919 and eventually was posted in India from 1926? to 1931.
The family appear to have moved several times. Ernest was born at 37 Cuxton Rd, Lily at Stanhope Road, William at Cross Street and Stanley at Cuxton Road.
Sarah was William's second wife. While researching a first wife for William Charles Packham was found, Hilda Legg. She was a widow whose father was Thomas Blake Hill, a policeman - see Stephen Rowing & Frances Pooley's family. She was therefore grand-daughter of Stephen Rowing and Frances Pooley - and therefore Sarah's (his second wife) cousin.
Sarah APW had indicated that William and Hilda had children although she would not say anything about this. Piecing together the clues from various people it appears that Hilda had one or two children by her first marriage and then she and William had a son, William. For some reason this first marriage seems not to have been talked about by the Packham and Wenn families!
