From William's will dated 1835 it is apparent that he was an innkeeper in Rochester although the name of the inn is not stated.  The will also states that he had an income from a turnpike (tollgate) on the Strood to Halling Road.  He had a sister Ann and a brother Samuel.  The will itself is extremely complicated and a credit to the skill of the legal profession in writing English in a way that is unintelligible to most ordinary human beings.
