In 1850 he married Caroline Shepherd and they had at least ten children i know
of, as well as looking after their Grand-Daughter Sarah. He seems to have had
several jobs such as a Labourer, an Agricultural Salesman and eventually a Collier at the Local Ibstock Mine, a
profession that was eventually to kill him. On the 27th of June 1880 while
working as a loader the roof caved in and he died of his injuries.

baptised on the 29th of March 1834 in Ibstock. She married Henry
Gray on New Years Eve 1850. They had at least ten children and they also looked

family as she has just been widowed because of an accident in the Ibstock
colliery. This left her looking after a large family although some children
would have been earning like William who was a Collier like his father.

Sarah was born on the 11th June
1870 in Ibstock. The Birth Certificate for Sarah Ann Gray gives her Mothers
name as Eliza Gray but no Father is mentioned. Sarah seems to have taken her
Mothers Surname as she was born out of wedlock. Certainly in 1881 she is living
with her Grand-Mother Caroline who had recently been widowed by the Death of
her Husband Henry Gray in the Colliery at Ibstock. On Christmas day 1890 she
married John William Troth who was also a miner at Ibstock, her Marriage
Certificate gives her Father's name as Henry Gray , i believe this is her Grand-Father
and not her Father.
In 1891 she is living with her new husband John William Troth in Chapel
Lane with her Mother Eliza and her husband John Allen & family. Tragically
Sarah's husband also lost his life in a mining accident at Ibstock Colliery
like her Grand-Father. He died on the 28th of July 1899. In the 1901 Sarah and her young family are
living at 35 Chapel Lane - Daughters Florrie aged 9 & Charlotte aged 5 and
Sons John William aged 3 & Charles Kenneth aged 1.

During the first world war he was a
member of the Leicestershire Yeomanry Regiment. They along with the other
Yeomanry regiments provided the cavalry arm of the Territoral Army. The Leicestershire Yeomanry were formed at
the Three Crowns Inn, Leicester on 10th April 1794 to meet the threat of a
French invasion. As with most Yeomanry regiments, they were supported by local
subscription. The Regiment's Officers were the county's gentry and its men
'reliable' yeoman farmers and their sons.
The Regiment saw overseas service
during the Boer War and both World Wars. Of particular note was the earning of
the LY's "Frezenburg" battle honour on 12 May 1915, when they held
the line with grim determination against vastly superior forces, in spite of
extemely heavy losses.
Occupation: 1920, Leather Bag Maker
He later worked at Victory Tyre
Works at Devonshire Road, Leicester. His job title was a Tyre Vulcanizer. (This is stated on the Marriage certificate
of Joan 21/03/1942).
A
Vulcanizer makes rubber tyres & other products by adding sulphur
into large vats to harden the rubber.

Joan can remember working at Grieves making
Hosery Needles, this was based at Queen Street, Leicester. In the winter of 1939
it was destoyed when it was among the first buildings to be bombed in
Leicester. The house in Cavendish Road where she had lived was also damaged on
the same night.
Joan married Ray on the 21st of March 1942
at Leicester Registry Office. She was
21 at the time. She was living at 29
Raven Road, Braunstone, Leicester with her parents. The certificate stating her
job as a housekeeper.
While in the RAF Joan and Ray had two
children. The first was named Roger and born in November 1942. The second child
was a daughter called Margaret, born in November 1944.
After being married and when Ray left the
RAF they moved to 50 Keightley Road, New Parks Estate with Ray. New Parks was a
brand new estate built at the end of the war. They later made the unusual deal
of swapping houses with the people at 69 Keightley Road which had an integrated
shop. Ray sold tailoring and general goods and repaired shoes at the shop.
Ray and
Joan then had two boys named John and Armand, they were later joined by a
sister called Melanie.

RAYMOND KIRK was born 13th December
1921. |
|
Raymond was born on the 13th December
1921 at 48 Martin Street, Leicester.
He came from a large family and had about
eleven Brothers & Sisters.
He went to School at Catherine Street &
then Belper Street.
Ray can remember as a child riding on the
trams around Leicester even at a very young age. Ray and his friends would skip
off school to run errands for people. A return ticket from Catherine Street or
Western Park to the centre of Leicester would cost just a penny. He can always remember having to turn the
backs of the seats the other way when the tram turned around so they always
faced the way the tram was going.
When the war broke out he joined the LDV
(Local Defence Volunteers) set up at Braunstone House, but by 1941 he had
joined up with the RAF. He was part
of 2798 squadron (D Flight) based at
Ansty near Coventry. During the war the squadron was active in several
countries such as France, Belgium and the Baltic areas. His commanding officer
p/o J.Green was awarded the Croix De Guerre(*).
(* The Croix De Guerre 1940-1945 was
founded on the 17th April 1945 by the Grand Duchess Charlotte as a token of national
gratitude to anyone who had taken part in the battle for the liberation of the
Grand Duchy (Luxembourg) during the second world war.)
His RAF Record states he enlisted on the
24th February 1941. His home address at the time was 12 Bendbow Rise, Braunstone,
Leicester. His next of Kin is given as Joan, his wife who was living at 29
Raven Road, Braunstone. His civil occupation is a Tailor Bespoke and his RAF
occupation states he is a gunner.
He married Joan on the 21st of March 1942
at Leicester Registry Office. His
address was still 12 Bendbow Rise,
Braunstone, Leicester.
The marriage certificate giving his Rank as
AC 2 and Number 1093901. It does state that his job had been a plasterers
labourer.
Raymond started at the level of AC2 , then
he was made up to AC1 and then LAC (Leading Aircraftman), If he had stayed in
the army after the war he would of been
made sergeant but this wasn't to be as he left and went back to life as
a tailor. It is noted on his RAF record
that his promotion to LAC was on the 1st August 1942. His RAF record gives his
actual release date of the 28th September 1946.
While in the RAF he and Joan had two
children. The first my father was born on the 13th November 1942, he was named
Roger. Ray's job is stated as leading aircraftman on Roger's Birth Certificate.
The second child was a daughter called Margaret, born on the 27th November
1944.
He found a job working at Clitheroes after
leaving the RAF, this was a shop at 49 Uppingham Road, Leicester. This sold tailoring and general goods. Later
he moved to 50 Keightley Road, New Parks Estate with his young family. New Parks was a brand new estate built at
the end of the war. They then did a
house swap and moved to 69 Keightley
Road where Ray had a shop. This again sold tailoring and general goods, he even
mended shoes as well. I always remember
it being full of every different coloured cotton thread you could imagine. They
also took in bags of clothes to wash ,
you could have the full service where your clothes returned to the owners all
washed and neatly ironed or you could have the cheaper version called a bagwash
where the clothes were returned to their owners in a bag un-ironed.
Ray and
Joan then had two boys named John and Armand, they were later joined by a
sister called Melanie.

Alfred was born in Sileby on the 2nd of
April 1861. His father John Kirk worked as a boat builder there. His
Grandfather was also called John Kirk. There seems to be a bit of a nautical
theme to his life. At the time of his marriage he was based at Anglesea
Barracks, he was a Drummer with the 17th Regiment. Presumably he had met
Charlotte who came from the Portsmouth area while with the Army, her father had
been a seaman with the Royal Navy. By 1891 he is back in Leicester and is
working in the shoe Trade as did many in Leicester, that's probably why he
moved to the city. In 1891 he is living as a lodger with his wife and two young
children at 128 Cranbourne Street, Leicester and working as a shoemaker. By
1901 he is living at 6 Foundary Square, Leicester with his enlarged family.
There are two 6 Foundary squares listed on the census - I am not sure whether
this a mistake or whether two families are actually living there. Later that
century in 1908 his occupation has changed to a Framework Knitter. He died on
the 18th June 1929 and his buried in a unmarked grave at Gilroes Cemetery,
Leicester.

Living with his wife Mary and the Goward
Family.
I know Mary was living in the Union Work
House at Great Bowden around 1889 as her Daughter was born there on the 19th
March 1889, certainly the father Alexander Blissett is not around at the time.
In 1891 she is working as a Servant for a Thomas Gordon Goward and his wife
Mary on the High Street, Market Harborough. Thomas was a grocer by trade.
Strangely her maiden name is not given on
her daughter Harriet’s Birth Certificate, it just states ‘Domestic Servant of
Wilbarston’.
