Candace Breakenridge

CANDACE BREAKENRIDGE, 16 YEARS OLD

DISTRICT/COUNTY WHERE YOU LIVE: Warrington, Cheshire

HOW DID YOU START OFF JUNIOR HANDLING?:

I was at Welsh Kennel Club show, 2007, and I well known person who has moved to Spain, started to talk to me after my class and said she judges junior handling and she said that my dog and I really stand out together and I should really do junior handling.

DO YOU TAKE PART IN ANY OTHER DOGGY ACTIVITIES (OBEDIENCE,AGILITY,FLYBALL,ETC)?

Agility has always interested me, but with me having show lhasa apsos, it would be impossible to do agility and show with them.

HOW MANY DOGS DO YOU LIVE WITH,OWN AND/OR SHOW?

I live with 6 dogs, 1 Collie X (Suzie), 3 Lhasa Apsos (Jasmine, Liberty and Tia), 1 Chinese Crested Hairless (Aden) and 1 Chihuahua (Jinx). And I show Liberty. Jasmine has retired now I am sorry to say, but if and when she has the pups, one or two will be out in the ring to carry on her show duties!

WHICH ONES DO YOU USE FOR JUNIOR HANDLING AND WHY?

I use one of the cocker spaniels when I have tough competition because cocker spaniels can be hard work so putting in the extra effort often gives you extra credit, and I now only use Liberty for Junior Handling (if I take the lhasa's) because Jasmine has retired due to maternal duties. I also now use a standard poodle called Punsh who is a really funny and lovely dog!

WHAT BREEDS HAVE YOU SHOWN BEFORE IN COMPETITION?

Italian Greyhounds, Chihuahuas, Lhasa Apsos, Cocker Spaniels, Standard Poodle

TELL US ABOUT HOW TO HANDLE (SHOWING STYLE) YOUR BREED IN JUNIOR HANDLING CLASSES?

My main 2 breeds are both stacked, (although one of my lhasas has been trained to free stand and be stacked). With cockers you hold the tail horizontally and control the muzzle area. With lhasas you just hold the lead in one hand keeping there head up high.

WHAT DO YOU NORMALLY WEAR IN COMPETITION?

For the year 2008, I have bought a red trouser suit with a black top, because it goes with most coloured dogs. Just not red dogs like cocker spaniels- it clashes quite badly.

WHAT ARE YOUR BEST ACHIEVEMENTS?

In junior handling, my best achievements would be winning the 12-16 class in Southport and Birkdale, qualifying me for Crufts. Their I handled my slate grey lhasa, Jasmine, and it was a class (as far as I remember) of 7 or 8.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE OCCASION SO FAR?

Recently I went to Crufts for the first time (first time showing) and I was really excited!! I was really nervous, but I felt really happy to be there. I didnt get place, but it didnt dishearten me, because I know Crufts is there next year!!

IF YOU ONLY HAD ONE 'TOP TIP' TO SHARE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Keep an eye on everything the judge does! The judge will move his/her position, and sometimes if you have either a table dog or a floor dog, the judge might just move the dogs leg into a wrong position purposely. Move it back!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT JUNIOR HANDLING?

Being around people who love dogs just as much as you.

WHAT DISAPPOINTS YOU IN THE WORLD OF JUNIOR HANDLING?

The waiting!! And often, you do sometimes get penalised for showing "easy" dogs such as lhasa's.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO BRING UP?

If anyone wants to talk to me my email address is cbreakenridge@gmail.com
