CERI JONES, 13 YEARS OLD
DISTRICT/COUNTY WHERE YOU LIVE: Powys
HOW DID YOU START OFF JUNIOR HANDLING?:
My Mum shows dogs so I started off from an early age.
DO YOU TAKE PART IN ANY OTHER DOGGY ACTIVITIES (OBEDIENCE,AGILITY,FLYBALL,ETC)? No
HOW MANY DOGS DO YOU LIVE WITH,OWN AND/OR SHOW?
5 Adult dogs and 7 puppies. 3 Adult Swedish Foxhounds (Hamiltonstovare) named, Florence, Sven and Thor. 2 Cocker Spaniels (English and American) named, Camilla and Hubert .
WHICH ONES DO YOU USE FOR JUNIOR HANDLING AND WHY?
I use the Swedish foxhounds for showing because they are a very calm breed, well natured and are quite small compared to the English Foxhounds.
WHAT BREEDS HAVE YOU SHOWN BEFORE IN COMPETITION?
Again I show the Swedish Foxhounds in Rare Breeds.
TELL US ABOUT HOW TO HANDLE (SHOWING STYLE) YOUR BREED IN JUNIOR HANDLING CLASSES?
You have to be firm with the dog. Rather than with a Cocker spaniel or a Whippet. You shouldn't hold the lead up tight. It should be slack. Pace should be long strides but shouldn't be too fast unless the dog will start running. In this breed you have to teach obedience from an early age. The earlier this is the easier it is to show them.
WHAT DO YOU NORMALLY WEAR IN COMPETITION?
Normally a trouser suit, flat soled shoes and a bright coloured shirt to stand out.
WHAT ARE YOUR BEST ACHIEVEMENTS?
My best achievement in a competition was at Blackpool last year where I got a first in the rare breed stakes.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE OCCASION SO FAR?
Mine would be 2 years ago. My first show at the LKA. Showed Meillion I Have a Dream. Unfortunately had to go before they placed because the breed classes were on.
IF YOU ONLY HAD ONE 'TOP TIP' TO SHARE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Always encourage the dog. Be firm and in control but friendly and encouraging at the same time.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT JUNIOR HANDLING?
The thrill of winning hehe. When your'e leaving the ring with a first place in your hand.
WHAT DISAPPOINTS YOU IN THE WORLD OF JUNIOR HANDLING?
Travelling to the shows! Especially when you live in a place as remote as Powys. Early mornings aren't my favourite things...
