CHARLOTTE OXMAN, 12 YEARS OLD
HOW DID YOU START OFF JUNIOR HANDLING?
I have been going to shows with my Mum and began to take an interest in the handling classes. One of my first shows was Paignton 2004, where I started to handle our new German Wire-haired Pointer puppy, I came 2nd in JHA 6 -11 class.
DO YOU TAKE PART IN ANY OTHER DOGGY ACTIVITIES (OBEDIENCE,AGILITY,FLYBALL,ETC)?
Yes I go on a shoot with my dad where we work our 3 wires on the drives and picking up. At YKC camp I did all sorts of activites, coming 4th in agility with my friends (Sarah Gibbons) labrador and 3rd in the show handling with my parents Champion Wire Ch.Kimmax Kennedy.
HOW MANY DOGS DO YOU LIVE WITH,OWN AND/OR SHOW?
I live with 8 dogs 3 German Wirehaired pointers. 1 labrador, and 4 cavaliers.
3 of them I show at present-
Ch. Kimmax Kennedy, Sh.Ch. Kimmax Koast to Koast and Kimmax Ice Kool Kate. I also have two puppy cavaliers who I am hoping to show in the future.
WHICH ONES DO YOU USE FOR JUNIOR HANDLING AND WHY?
I show my parents German Wirehaired Pointer KENNY.
WHAT BREEDS HAVE YOU SHOWN BEFORE IN COMPETITION?
I have shown my mums friends, wires, labrador and hungarian viZlas all in breed classes.
TELL US ABOUT HOW TO HANDLE (SHOWING STYLE) YOUR BREED IN JUNIOR HANDLING CLASSES?
To show a wire you have to stack the dog, holding both the head and tail, this breed is a medium sized dog so is shown on the floor when presented to the judge.
WHAT DO YOU NORMALLY WEAR IN COMPETITION?
I usually wear a red jacket and a pair of white trousers and flat shoes. I wear these bright and light colours as I show a dark brown dog.
WHAT ARE YOUR BEST ACHIEVEMENTS?
My best achievement was when I went to show in YKC handling 6-11 at Crufts 2005 for the first time and came 2nd.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE OCCASION SO FAR?
When I came 1st at Leeds 2005 in JHA with my playful 18th month old wire Kate, she was very naughty, she kept jumping in and out of the ring and trying to play with the dog in front of me, I eventually managed to calm her down, and I was very surprised to win the class.
IF YOU ONLY HAD ONE 'TOP TIP' TO SHARE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Keep your handling simple, do not over handle and keep talking and reassuring your dog.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT JUNIOR HANDLING?
The showing and having a chance to be able to do something and enjoy it just like the adults.
WHAT DISAPPOINTS YOU IN THE WORLD OF JUNIOR HANDLING?
Waiting for judges critiques to hopefully appear in the dog press only to find they have only written a short comment, and sometimes only on the first place winner. Sometimes they do no even appear at all.We would appreciate the judges opinion and can only learn by any criticism of our handling.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO BRING UP?
In junior handling just try your best and enjoy it.
