1. Amber Checkett, age 10 handling an affenpinscher. I liked Ambers confidence and happiness as soon as she entered the ring. Although she encouraged her dog at every step, I did think her voice commands were too loud and I told her after the class so she quietened down in the challenge! Overall, a neat and tidy handler who carried out patterns with precision and listened to what I asked. I also liked how before she set off on her pattern, she just took a couple of moments to focus. Well done and I look forward to watching your progress.

2. Amelia Whipps, age 10 with a papillon. Amelia came very close to 1 but she lost out on shoddy pattern work. She did not use the full ring space when carrying out her triangle and it didn’t even look one – more like a bulb-shaped circle. It was a shame because everything else was spot on, presentation was first class and she had a fabulous rapport with her dog. If you work on your patterns, you’ll be a top contender.

3. Calum Kitteridge, age 11 handling a boxer

12 – 16 years (6, 3a)

1. and Best Junior Handler. Jonathon Lane, age 13 with a st bernard. I was very impressed with Jonathon, in fact I’ve never seen someone handle such a large breed so efficiently. He actually made it look easy at some points! Again another happy looking handler who rose to the challenge and carried out patterns expertly considering the size of the dog. He was turned out well wearing a black pin – stripe suit and made the dog look amazing when standing. I was disappointed to hear that he had been knocked quite alot in competitions with this breed but a handling judge should take into account how hard they have to work and must forgive slow turns and curvey corners.

2. Emma Hale, age 14 with a hungarianvVizsla. Emma demonstrated very ‘slick’ handling with her vizsla, she set a nice pace with the dog and there was no fuss, just good breed handling. But she seemed to be taking it too seriously for my liking, a smile and a thanks to the judge once you’ve finished your round is polite. And her ‘up and down’ looked more like a banana than a straight line.

3. Dom Santoriello, age 12 handling a min pin.

In the challenge, I asked each handler to carry out a ‘T’. They were close but Amber broke the ‘golden rule’ even before carrying out her T therefore I gave BJH to Jonathon.
