Sally Reeve has sent me news of her daughter, Samantha: “Just to let you know Samantha is now handling a new dog "Houston" , an Australian Shepherd (Can Ch Touchstone Dream Come True ). She attended the East of England ladies Kennel Society Open show on 3rd August . Sam and Houston won Junior Handling (6-11years) with 17 entries. And then went onto also win the YKC Handling (6-11 years) with 13 entries. They have been teamed up together since April this year and are proving a very good partnership. Turbo, her other Aussie that she has been handling and showing for the past 18 months is due to return to the USA in November. His joint owner over in the states has been so pleased with what Sam has achieved over here, she has invited her to accompany Turbo and compete in the Australian Nationals held in Las Vegas in November 2008.” Well done on your success Samantha and let us know how you get on in the Australian Nationals later this year!

A few words of congratulations have come in from very proud parents of Kristian Hitchin. Kristian has recently one two first places in handling classes; one at East of England in the YKC 12-15 years handling class under Mr T Jones and a 12-16 years win and Best Junior Handler at Alfreton & District Canine Society under Bulgarian judge, Mr Kostadin Shankov. Apparently the latter judge really put the handlers through their paces, making sure that the competitors were on their toes right from entering the ring and gave them difficult patterns to complete. Well done Kristian and good luck in the future.

10-year-old Antonia Leech with her bearded collie came first in the 6-11 years class at Leeds and also won the YKC 8-11 years class too so managed to qualify for Crufts. Antonia was absolutely delighted with the results as at the moment, she is practising handling the family’s two very different breeds – the beardie and a portugese podengo!

10-year-old Callum Harris (alaskan malamute) is back on the mend again and back at the shows. On 14th June at Exeter he was best overall handler, beating even the adult handlers. Then on 15th June at Risca he again took best overall with a lovely trophy. South Wales Champ show saw him get a 2nd and National Working and Pastoral saw him take a reserve but yesterday at Liskeard he took 1st in the YKC class qualifying for his first ever Crufts next year then in the JHA class he also took 1st qualifying him again! He was thrilled as they were large and important classes too.

Congratulations Callum, glad to hear you are better.

Congratulations to Amy Balch for taking part in the junior handling final at the World Show in Stockholm in July. This time, Amy wasn’t placed but she says she had an amazing time.

An absolute amazing result has come from William Croxford who handled a friends Champion norweigan elkhound Ch Bowerhinton Bright Knight at Cakirjo at East of England Ch show to the dog CC. The judge was a breed specialist, Mr Brian Middleton. William and his mum Nicola were truly amazed with the result and so you should be, well done!

Following on from the message below, Sophie Ellis’ dad has e-mailed to say well done to Sophie who competed in Belgium this week in junior handling classes. This is only the second time she has shown in Europe and she came 2nd in her age group (up to twelve years) and fifth overall at the show across all age groups. She was handling a Japanese Akita Inu instead of her usual Smooth Fox Terrier so was especially pleased as this was only the second time she had handled the dog. Well done Sophie.

Thank you to Roger Crooks, who is President of the Smooth Fox Terrier Association for this kind message: “I would like to say congratulations and very well done to the junior handlers of Smooth Fox Terriers, we are now a vulnerable breed and it is good to know that we have youngsters who are so keen and capable when it comes to handling and showing smooths. I wish them well for the future.

Good luck to Sophie Ellis, Fleur Marston and Jessica Gregory, these young people represent the future for our breed. I hope you get lots of red cards in 2008.”

10 year old William Croxford from Kettering and his norweigan elkhounds has been unwell. After enjoying a super weekend on the 17th/18th May by winning both his age group classes in the handling at two different open shows in the Coventry area, he then and went and broke his wrist! His mum, Nicola tells me that he’s OK but it was a nasty break which at one point they thought it might need wiring. However he was determined to be up and about showing again by Bath ch show. Since then, he won the handling class at the Hound Club of East Anglia, was awarded a 2nd at Melton Mowbray and a Reserve at Southern Counties.

Another youngster who’s not been very well is 9 year old Callum Harris from Bristol. Callum normally handles the families alaskan malamute ‘Kenai’ in junior handling classes. His mum Stacey says he’s been unwell since Easter which has meant a lot of time off school which has also resulted in staying away from the shows. I’m sure you will also join me in wishing the two boys to get well soon.

Some nice pictures have been sent from Scotland of 9 year old Lewis Fraser from Inverness. Lewis has only been showing his beagles for just over a year now but the picture on the right shows just how well he has been doing.

The other pictures are of Lewis handling the family’s dog at the recent Scottish Beagle Club Championship show. He needs to do alot of growing. Good luck Lewis!

April 19th 2008

Fantastic news from 11 year old Sophie Ellis who won the YKC 6-11 years age group at National Terrier Ch show. She says it was a big class and had even borrowed a smooth fox terrier from a friend to compete in the class, of which she hadn’t handled before. Both of her dogs are out of action due to maternal duties.

Sophie also said how the committee had made an extra special effort for the junior handlers as the special rossettes that they presented to each age group winner were according to her, ‘amazing’!

She’s looking forward to the summer championship shows as she will have two new puppies out, both of which she bred herself. Good luck Sophie in all your doggying!

Many congratulations to all junior handlers who showed at CRUFTS, you all did yourselves proud.

HELENA AND I ARE THRILLED THAT 5 OUT OF THE 8 JUNIOR HANDLING CLASS WINNERS AT CRUFTS WERE WON BY HANDLERS WHO HAVE ATTENDED OUR JH TRAINING DAY.”

Congratulations to 10 year old Charlotte Norridge from Gloucester with her beagle ‘Harry’ who won the Hound and Terrier 6-11 years class. Charlotte has only been handling for less than a year so to become a Crufts winner so soon is absolutely phenomenal.

13 year old Hollie Kavanagh from Oxford took on the big boys and girls in the Working & Pastoral 12-16 years class coming 1st place with her Dobermann, Doberway Chocktaw.

Another nice handling win came for 11 year old Katie Stewart from Herefordshire in the Gundog 6-11 years class. It was Katie’s first time qualifying for Crufts so to win the 1st place was an excellent result for her and her black labrador ‘Molly’.

And 15 year old Georgina Ferguson from Surrey swapped her usual petit basset griffon vendeen with a miniature schnauzer to win the 12-16 years Utility and Toys class. She changed breed due to showing committments with her hounds on the last day of Crufts. Georgina had only met the schnauzer once before so she was really delighted to be placed first.

Finally, we could not round up the handling news without mentioning 16 year old Amy Balch and her weimeraners from Devon. Amy not only was thrilled to win the Gundog 12-16 years class but she also took the title of National Show Handler of the Year. Many many congratulations Amy. All that extra hard work paid off!

Many congratulations to Hannah Escott who came 3rd in the Pedigree Junior Handler of the Year final in January. She has written to tell me she was absolutely thrilled and over the moon with the placing. She said the day was completely amazing and it was a bonus to come third! I’m sure many of you will offer Hannah your congratulations to her at the shows, if you see her, give her a good pat on the back! It was Hannah’s last time to compete in the finals.

February 3rd 2008

Ebony Owen’s mum, Zoe, has e-mailed to wish Ebony good luck at Crufts. Ebony and her deerhounds had enjoyed a very successful 2007, winning the junior handlgin class at every show. Ebony’s whippet was tragically killed in a road traffic accident two years ago so was forced to handle the family’s homebred boy Doogal Wood Melick, so her mum is especially proud of her wins. Apparently though Ebony could be about to give handling up to become a singer in a band called ‘No Jerks Aloud’! Mum says ‘oh well, I’m only the kennel maid and taxi!’
