11 year old Sophie Ellis has e-mailed to let us know of what a good year she has been having. She says “I have been showing my Smooth Fox Terriers now for five years and have had a really good year qualifying two of my dogs for Crufts, one of them being a puppy from the first litter I have bred. I have also qualified for the YKC handling at Crufts again, as well as having numerous wins in JHA classes. I have qualified for the YKC stakes class at Crufts again this year but this time not with a Smooth but a Shiba Inu. I also went to Belgium for the Euro Dog Show for the first time, I came fourth in my age group handling a Japanese Akita Inu puppy. I have had some good results in the breed classes with my Smooth Fox Terriers, but have also been lucky enough to start handling other peoples Smooth Fox Terriers, Boston Terriers, Japanese Akita Inu, Flatcoat Retrievers, Shiba Inu and an Airdale for their owners. I am hoping for another successful year in 2008, both in the ring and with my second litter of Smooths due January.” Excellent work Sophie and well done!

Some news has come from Melanie Culver about her stepson 9 year old Nathan Mills. “On 18th November Nathan, won the 6-11 years JH at Mid Herts Gundog Open Show and then went on to beat the 12-16 year old in the challenge. What’s more, this is the third time in a row he has done this at this show (they have two shows a year) according to the trophy with past winners names on this is the first time it has been won three times in a row (Joe Macdonald has won it 3 times but with a break). Nathan was handling a flatcoat Gaylpume Classy Lady at Broomsway (Anya).” Congratulations Nathan and keep up the good work!

Two of these firsts have been YKC handling classes for Crufts, 1st at National Gundog under judge Kate Vincent and 1st at Bournemouth under judge Kirsty Miller. Katie is looking forward to handling her labrador Molly at Crufts 2008. Well done Katie for all your success.

Some amazing news from eight year old junior handler Libby Jones. She showed her nan’s sealyham terrier, Tommarv Scarlet Ribbons at Blackwood Open Canine Society earlier this month to win Reserve Best in Show under Mr D Coode. It was an espeiclally good win as she had to come through from the AV NSC classes. Her grandad Cliff Jones says “we are absolutely delighted as Libby received a tremendous cheer from the good crowd who had remained around the BIS ring at the end of the day”. Brilliant and very well done.

18 year old Kirsten Taylor from Scotland sent me this amazing news which she couldn’t keep to herself and why shouldn’t she!?
“At their first show, two of the german shepherd puppies I bred qualified for Crufts at SKC aged just 6 months and 2 days, and I actually beat someone at junior handling (almost the first time, it isn’t easy doing neat turns with a GSD) and what made it better was they had toy dogs, I was still third but it's better than last (which is where I usually come). I am so happy about my boys qualifying because it’s the first dogs I've bred myself and (as my dad points out everytime they trash something which needs tidied up) it's the first time anyone in my family has qualified for Crufts because we only started showing dogs two years ago, a year after I got my first dog for my 15th birthday.”

Nicky Logie has written to me with news of little Erin. She writes; “As you know Erin has had a difficult year with her showdog Alba being knocked down and killed on the road. After that her other dog Kai chased a rabbit and ended up falling from a 50ft cliff , he is on the mend but has had to have major surgery to his leg which will never be able to move again.
So Erin is so chuffed with her achievements this year. She has had to borrow dogs that she has never shown before and has managed to come 4th overall in the Scottish Junior Handler of the Year which has qualified her for Crufts nationals. She also won the YKC handling at SKC and the JHA class at Dundee open show and topped it off by winning best junior handler.. She has also qualified her little crossbreed for Crufts in the groomers competition and the agility dog of the year.
To top it all Erin and buzz auditioned to take part on Animal Planets top dog and were amazed to be one of only 28 chosen to compete so its off to Shropshire in August for the heats .
We are very proud of Erin and very grateful to the kind people that have let Erin borrow dogs to compete with as it is a big ask to let a 9 year old take charge of your show dog. We look forward now to September when Erin will once again be in the breed ring with her new large munsterlander pup Paws. We would just like to wish her luck with her little lad Buzz in all his future competitions and just enjoy your self Erin!!”
Thanks for letting us know Nicky and well done Erin.

14 year old Kristian Hitchen with his norfolk terrier competed in his first junior handling class at Blackpool Ch show and came first place. Kristian has only been handling for two years and he says it’s been a difficult road, as they’ve found it hard to find ringcraft classes who specialise in junior handling. Luckily he says the family met Gina Dorkins and her mum Dorothy at a breed club show and thanks to their encouragement, Kristian’s kept showing and he says it is now an enjoyable hobby for all the family. Great stuff to hear.

News from Christchurch and New Forest CS’s two day open show. 16 year old Samantha Bull won the pastoral group with ‘Daz’ the families’ swedish valhund and then went reserve BIS! It was worth the travelling from the Isle of Wight then!
Another Sam, Sam Moore (nee Etches), ex top junior handler from Dorset, handled a friends rottweiler to win the working group, just a few weeks after having a baby. She can’t keep out of the ring long enough!

Many congratulations to 15 year old Gergie Ferguson. She has won all points for the Show Certifcate of Merit with her PBGV, Daisy. She writes. “We got 3 year old Willowbrae Drivin Mis Daisy when she was about 18 months old, previously moving from home to home constantly and never having a stable life. When we first took Daisy to a show she was petrified, she crawled in on her stomach with her tail glued between her legs. Two years later, Daisy is a happy, perky, lively confident dog who loves showing and is the ultimate handling partner. Together we have beaten her fears and become a well known handling duo. This year I won our handling class at Crufts with Daisy, proving how far she has come. We are delighted with her achievement.”

Well done to 12 year old Marcia Hutchin and her cavalier king charles spaniels at Birmingham National Ch show. She won the Young Kennel Club 12 - 16 years handling class, so has qualified for Crufts 2008 with her puppy Digby! She says it was an extra special win as she has never been placed before at a champ show. To add to the handling win, she won a 5th and a 1st in her breed classes with her older dog Fred!

11 year old Bobbie Burnard from Guernsey has e-mailed to say she was successful at the 3-day Jersey Junior Handling Association Easter Gala day. “I just thought I’d let you know how well I did! On my own I was, 2nd in agility 2nd in Show handling and 6th in obedience. I was paired with Katie Kelly and as a team we came 2nd in agility, 1st in Show handling 6 -11 years and 1st in obedience. Overall I was 6th out of the 6-17 yr olds.” I’m told some handlers made the trip from England, Wales and Guernsey.
Well done Bobbie, looks like she had a busy day!

March 31st 2007
I have received some sad news from 9 year old Erin Logie’s mum, Nicky about one of the family’s dogs. “Hi, just so Erin doesn’t have to explain to a lot of folk. Alba the munsterlander bitch that Erin owned, loved and trained from seven weeks was tragically run over and killed just two weeks after Crufts. As you can imagine Erin is distraught at losing her pal, she was also with me when we found her. Alba was a very special honest dog who did everything for Erin. We are so lucky to have had the honour of owning such a wonderful happy girl even if only for the short time she was with us. As Erin appeared on the Crufts preview show with Alba we have that footage of her doing what she loved, running with her pals on the beach and in time we can watch it but at the moment it is too painful. Erin and Alba gained a third place at Crufts in the handling and their medal hangs with honour in Erin’s room beside Alba's photo.”

Bee Hurst from Dorset has been in touch to let us know about 9 year old Kiri Hurst who did well at Crufts in the handling. She was thrilled to get 2nd in the YKC 6 -11 years handling on Gundog Day with ‘Fudge’ (Sanrogue One to Treasure). I’m told this was extra special as this will be Fudge’s last time doing handling as he is retiring (not from agility or heelwork to music though!)
