PHILIPPA LATHAM-JACKSON, 11 YEARS OLD
DISTRICT/COUNTY WHERE YOU LIVE:
Hereford, Herefordshire.
HOW DID YOU START OFF JUNIOR HANDLING?
Well I nagged my mum if I could show one of our dogs, Esme and so she let me show her and I came second.
DO YOU TAKE PART IN ANY OTHER DOGGY ACTIVITIES (OBEDIENCE,AGILITY,FLYBALL,ETC)?
I do have a passion for agility.
HOW MANY DOGS DO YOU LIVE WITH,OWN AND/OR SHOW?
Ok there is:
Dj (my dog. long haired miniture dachshund)
Esme (gold afghan hound. drishaun)
Flora (red afghan hound. drishaun)
WHICH ONES DO YOU USE FOR JUNIOR HANDLING AND WHY?
I normally use Flora as she is very beautiful and goes around the ring elegantly and swiftly. Also I love her like a sister and we have formed a very close bond. I sometimes show dj but we have been trying to keep his weight down which is very difficult with dachshunds.
WHAT BREEDS HAVE YOU SHOWN BEFORE IN COMPETITION?
I think I have shown some sort of spaniel before I begun junior handling.
TELL US ABOUT HOW TO HANDLE (SHOWING STYLE) YOUR BREED IN JUNIOR HANDLING CLASSES?
Well you need to have a firm grip on the lead as they can do a runner and go very fast. Also you need to put their legs back and their front legs in but not too much. You trot around the show ring with them normally in a circle but sometimes you do a triangle or L or a T.
WHAT DO YOU NORMALLY WEAR IN COMPETITION?
Normally I wear my showing jacket and trousers.
WHAT ARE YOUR BEST ACHIEVEMENTS?
My best achievements would be getting best of breed with dj.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE OCCASION SO FAR?
Oh dear well its got to be the time that I ended up in tears when Esme started rolling around in the ring while I was trying to make her move SHE WOULDNT BUDGE. She then thought that it wold be fun to pull me over flat on my face and run out the ring.
IF YOU ONLY HAD ONE 'TOP TIP' TO SHARE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Always talk to your dog and try to relax. Don’t get all nervous.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT JUNIOR HANDLING?
I just love being around dogs.
WHAT DISAPPOINTS YOU IN THE WORLD OF JUNIOR HANDLING?
Some of the judges can be a bit snobbish sometimes and it really annoys me.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO BRING UP?
Just that Esme, one of our afghans has qualified for Crufts for life and I am going to the Richmond champ show next year.
