POPPIE JACONELLI, 14 YEARS OLD
DISTRICT/COUNTY WHERE YOU LIVE:
Boston, Lincolnshire
HOW DID YOU START OFF JUNIOR HANDLING?
I started handling about one year ago, because at the ring craft I go to there is a young lady called Charlene Kirk who was a handler, & this inspired me. I found handling so much fun. So when my puppy became 6 months I started showing her. Now I am going to as many shows as I can and I enjoy handling!
DO YOU TAKE PART IN ANY OTHER FIELD (I.E. OBEDIENCE, AGILITY, FLYBALL ETC)?
I don't take part in any other activities, but I would love to try them out.
HOW MANY DOGS DO YOU LIVE WITH, OWN AND/OR SHOW?
I live with 4 Irish setters, and 1 English springer spaniel. I don't own any of them, but at home 2 of the Irish setters are mine ( STAR & DIZZY). I have been handling a red and white setter (TELAH) which is owned by my mums friend Jacqui. I also use one of her Irish setters (SOPHIE) in the handling classes, as she is a little bit older than my setters.
WHICH ONES DO YOU USE FOR JUNIOR HANDLING AND WHY?
I mainly handle my youngest bitch (STAR), this is because ever since she was a baby I have shown her and she is very elegant when in the ring. I have been handling Sophie a lot as she is a little bit older than Star, and knows what she is doing.
WHAT BREEDS HAVE YOU SHOWN BEFORE IN COMPETITION?
I have shown irish setters, collie, red & white setter, english springer spaniel, cocker spaniel, caviler king charles spaniel & a whippet.
TELL US ABOUT HOW TO HANDLE (SHOWING STYLE) YOUR BREED IN JUNIOR HANDLING CLASSES?
An irish setter should be stacked when being shown. Their head should be held up and tail held at the same level as the dogs top line, so that the dogs top lines slopes gradually down. They should move with both elegance & power, but at a medium pace. When moving an Irish setter you can place the lead up behinds its ears, so that you don't lose the dogs concentration. You can also move it with a loose lead so that your dog moves more freely.
WHAT DO YOU NORMALLY WEAR IN COMPETITION?
I normally wear a pair of navy trousers, with a t-shirt and a white jacket, or a pair of white trousers and a purple t-shirt. I wear a pair of navy flat shoes, & I tie my hair back.
WHAT ARE YOUR BEST ACHIEVEMENTS?
My best achievement was getting a first at the I.S.B.C championship show. Getting a second at East of England Ch show was also exciting.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE OCCASION SO FAR?
My most memorable occasion was when Telah the red and white setter I show got best bitch at East of England at only 11 months old!
IF YOU ONLY HAD ONE 'TOP TIP' TO SHARE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
To enjoy yourself and let your dog have fun, if you win or lose it doesn't matter. Just go in the ring confident and have fun!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT JUNIOR HANDLING?
Getting to meet new people & making friends.
WHAT DISAPPOINTS YOU IN THE WORLD OF JUNIOR HANDLING?
When the judge doesn't no what they are doing, and end up judging the dog and not the handler!
