ROXANNE MORISON, 18 YEARS OLD

DISTRICT/COUNTY WHERE YOU LIVE:

Brent Knoll, Somerset.

HOW DID YOU START OFF JUNIOR HANDLING?

My Mum has been showing for about 20 years and my Sister is an ex junior handler so I got into it when I was 6. I showed for a couple of years before I decided to move into Horses instead, at about 13 I took up showing again.

DO YOU TAKE PART IN ANY OTHER DOGGY ACTIVITIES (OBEDIENCE,AGILITY,FLYBALL,ETC)?

I usually stick to just showing my dogs as I enjoy that the most although I would like to try some other activities, I just need to find a dog that is willing to do it!

HOW MANY DOGS DO YOU LIVE WITH,OWN AND/OR SHOW?

Currently my family share our home with 8 Boxers (4 of which are shown) and our French Bulldog, Cookie who is also shown. I personally show my dog Sumo (whom I own) but I also help my mum show the others and anybody elses dogs who ask.

WHICH ONES DO YOU USE FOR JUNIOR HANDLING AND WHY?

I use Sumo for Junior Handling as we have a strong bond and I know how to get the best out of him. He is also the best behaved out of our Boxers.

WHAT BREEDS HAVE YOU SHOWN BEFORE IN COMPETITION?

I have shown Boxers, French Bulldogs, Samoyeds and Dalmatians to name some.

TELL US ABOUT HOW TO HANDLE (SHOWING STYLE) YOUR BREED IN JUNIOR HANDLING CLASSES?

Boxers need to be stacked with their hocks at right angles to the ground and their front feet shoulder width apart (ideally they should have a box like outline.) In breed classes I bait my dog but in the handling I either hold the head or string them up. They need to be moved at a fast jog pace.

WHAT DO YOU NORMALLY WEAR IN COMPETITION?

I usually wear black trousers with either a black or pink jacket and black shoes. I also wear a grey trouser suit with either a black or blue shirt.

WHAT ARE YOUR BEST ACHIEVEMENTS?

Best Puppy in Breed and Puppy Group 4 (South West Working and Pastoral Breeds)

Best of Breed and Working Group 1 (Bridgwater and District Canine Premier Open Show)

Winning 12-16 year old Working Group at Richmond 2007

Winning the YKC Working Stakes at Crufts 2008

All with Sumo.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE OCCASION SO FAR?

Definitely winning my age group at Richmond this year as it was a complete shock and it was my final chance to compete. I was extremely proud of Sumo who behaved so well despite the fact we arrived late and were in a bit of a rush! Also my mum and Fletch winning the 'Mancunian Puppy Of The Year' Title this year. Winning the YKC stakes 2008 at Crufts is also something I will never forget! The class was really strong and there were some very nice dogs, Sumo was in complete show mode and obviously stood out enough for us to win. I got a huge buzz when the crowd cheered, my parents were extremely happy and my sister was in tears! Getting into the big ring on the last day was the scariest experience of my life, I was so nervous I even asked my mum to take Sumo in! But in the end I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and I’m extremely proud of Sumo for being on his best behaviour.

IF YOU ONLY HAD ONE 'TOP TIP' TO SHARE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Always praise your dog whether you win or lose.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT JUNIOR HANDLING?

Just catching up with friends and generally just taking part.

WHAT DISAPPOINTS YOU IN THE WORLD OF JUNIOR HANDLING?

Judges who disregard handlers who have more difficult breeds to handle in favour of those whose dogs do all the work for them. Also judges who judge the dog and not the handler.
