SARAH CLINTON, 16 YEARS OLD
DISTRICT/COUNTY WHERE YOU LIVE:
West Midlands.
HOW DID YOU START OFF JUNIOR HANDLING?
My mum started handling, it looked good fun so I thought I would have a go myself.
DO YOU TAKE PART IN ANY OTHER DOGGY ACTIVITIES (OBEDIENCE, AGILITY, FLYBALL, ETC)?
I take part in showing.
HOW MANY DOGS DO YOU LIVE WITH, OWN AND/OR SHOW?
5 Cocker Spaniels and 3 Golden Retrievers
WHICH ONES DO YOU USE FOR JUNIOR HANDLING AND WHY?
I use Harvey the Cocker Spaniel because we have a good bond with each other and he loves showing off to people.
But we now have a new cocker pup called "chico" so I shall be having a go with him.
WHAT BREEDS HAVE YOU SHOWN BEFORE IN COMPETITION?
Cocker spaniels, Golden Retriever’s and Irish setter’s
TELL US ABOUT HOW TO HANDLE (SHOWING STYLE) YOUR BREED IN JUNIOR HANDLING CLASSES?
The Cocker Spaniel is a table dog, they need to be stacked, and the lead is positioned under the ears. Cocker spaniel’s are moved at a brisk pace fast enough for them to stride out to see the drive in their rear legs.
The Golden Retrievers can be free stud or stacked and moved on a loose lead.
WHAT DO YOU NORMALLY WEAR IN COMPETITION?
A beige jacket and trousers.
WHAT ARE YOUR BEST ACHIEVEMENTS?
My best achievements are qualifying for the semi-finals at Richmond and also qualifying for Crufts and getting my studbook number with my cocker Sophie.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE OCCASION SO FAR?
Qualifying 1 of my dogs for the very first time.
IF YOU ONLY HAD ONE 'TOP TIP' TO SHARE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Enjoy every minute of it,there are plenty more shows!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT JUNIOR HANDLING?
Meeting loads of new people who have the same hobby as me.
WHAT DISAPPOINTS YOU IN THE WORLD OF JUNIOR HANDLING?
Judges who judge the dog, not the handler’s
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO BRING UP?
The thing I dislike in breed class is when the judge seems to like your dog but when they realise they don’t know you they lose interest in you even though they like the dog. How can beginners move on unless they are given a chance?
Also I would like to say a big thank you to Nikki and Becki Craig, Gail Jones and Neil Partridge for all their help and support.
