CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION WINS ECO-AWARD!

In March 2002, the Church of the Ascension became the first church to be awarded a plaque for its environmental efforts. Given by Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, it recognises the efforts made by the congregation to preserve their environment and save wastage. The plaque was unveiled by Councillor Phil Portwood at the Ascension Spring Festival on Saturday, 11th May 2002.

'The Church that's lean, clean and green..... and deserves its eco-award'

That's what 'London Link' had to say in their Summer 2002 edition in an article about the Church of the Ascension. They reported that Churches are assessed on three criteria : Spiritual progress, practical measures and work with the rest of the local community'.

The Vicar of the Ascension, Simon Reed, told them "Christians believe in a Creator God, but we realised that we needed to go further in putting that belief into practice.

"We're using various opportunities in the year besides harvest to keep making connection with how we live. We have .... carried out an audit of everything we do that uses energy."

Gillian Harrison, the Ascension's 'Green Apostle', said "We've got a long way to go, but I hope getting this award will spur us on to great new things."

GOING FOR GREEN
"We don't inherit the earth through our ancestors,
we borrow it from our children"

Church of England takes new climate change initiative

In September 2009 the Church of England launched its latest climate change initiative – the new Climate Justice Fund website – which has been set up in partnership with Tearfund.

The website calculates the carbon footprint of individuals and churches and then compares this figure with what is considered to be their “fair share” of emissions.  Surplus carbon usage is then calculated into a financial equivalent to be paid into a fund supporting Anglican churches in developing countries.

Climate Justice Fund donations will be used to tackle problems related to changes in the climate in Africa and to support the development of sustainable agriculture in areas where climate change has affected crops.  It will also be invested in reforestation and the development of environmentally sustainable cooking methods.

You can try out the site at www.climatejusticefund.org.
