PROJECT DESCRIPTION STREETMATE! has been set up in partnership by NCH and Churches Together in Haywards Heath and District, to respond to the needs of young people aged 13-25 years within Haywards Heath and surrounding areas. STREETMATE! has a detached youth worker who will undertake outreach work alongside other professionals, volunteer colleagues and appropriate peers, at a time and location where young people choose to gather in the community. Venues will include parks, shopping centres, pubs, stations, housing estates and the streets themselves. The youth worker will also carry out detached work in local youth groups, youth centres and schools. STREETMATE! aims to support and promote existing services aimed at young people, and develop new provisions in partnership with other relevant agencies to address the identified needs of young people in the area. STREETMATE! also aims to give young people a voice within the community, empowering young people to influence and shape the services available to them, and decisions that affect their lives. STREETMATE! intends to provide a point of contact for young people, offering adaptable and person centred provision. This will include support, advice, advocacy, counselling, guidance and information on issues affecting young peoples lives such as; drugs and alcohol; sexual health; relationships; bullying; mental health; welfare benefits; housing; careers; contraception; sexuality; unemployment; and discrimination. When a need arises, STREETMATE! will link young people to specialist agencies, support groups, or professionals in these fields. |
PROJECT STATEMENT STREETMATE! aims to respond to the needs of young people aged 13-25 years within Haywards Heath and surrounding areas, to enable them to achieve their potential and live a rewarding life. STREETMATE! believes in the value of each young person and, in partnership with others, aims to provide and encourage informed and caring relationships within the community. STREETMATE! promotes the principle that all young people are entitled to equal rights in society, regardless of age, race, gender, status, disability, sexual orientation, culture, family income or circumstances, language, religion, or any other difference. STREETMATE! respects all young people as unique individuals, each with their own complex identity, personality, relationships, potentials, experiences and contributions. STREETMATE! promotes the principle of empowerment and seeks to ensure that young people have a voice, influence and place within the community and society as a whole, helping to prevent disaffection and social exclusion. STREETMATE! believes that central to achieving a coherent response to meet the needs of young people in Haywards Heath is the concept of partnership and will seek to work with other voluntary and statutory service providers. STREETMATE! believes that young peoples participation is vital to its success and will strive to include them in all areas of the project and encourage active participation at all levels, helping to ensure the project is responsive to young peoples needs and circumstances. |
