Congratulations to Michele
Thomson on her Curtis Cup
performance
On behalf of ALCGA
congratulations to Michele
Thomson for her
performance in the Curtis
Cup at St. Andrews.
Whilst the GB &
I team were beaten by the
Americans Michele gave
great battling
performances right the way
through the three days.
Michele is quoted on
Gillian Kirkwood Golf as
saying:
“Walking up that 18th
fairway to the roar and
cheers of the home support
was something I will never
ever forget. It was simply
an amazing experience. “
Well done again Michele.
Ann Smart runner-up at Vets
Congratulations
to Ann Smart who got to
the final of the Northern
Division championship of
the Scottish Veteran
Ladies Golf Association at
Inchmarlo Golf Centre on
3rd June.
Ann lost to Kathleen
Sutherland, the current
holder of the Scottish
senior women's stroke-play
championship, and the 2006
Northern Division vets'
champion by 6 and 4 but
had earlier had beaten the
defending champion,
Heather Anderson

LAURA MURRAY SWOOPS TO CONQUER
IN
NESS CUP AT INVERNESS
report
by Cal Carson Golf
Robert
Gordon University student Laura
Murray from Alford produced an
excellent second-round 69 to win
the Ness Open 36-hole SLGA Order
of Merit women’s golf tournament
at Inverness Golf Club today
(Sunday).
Scotland cap & R&A Bursar
Laura, 19, trailed first-round
leader Lesley Hendry (Routenburn)
by four shots after an opening 76
but she swept to the front with
her three-under-par figures in the
second round.
Laura, a former Scottish
schoolgirls champion, would have
won even more convincingly but for
a double bogey 6 at the 16th .where
she drove into trees and found a
bunker with her recovery.
Earlier in the round she had
birdied the first, fourth, sixth,
10th, 13th
and 14th with a
solitary bogey at the seventh in
halves of 34 (two under par) and
35 (one under par).
Laura’s 145 total saw her home
with two shots to spare from Megan
Briggs (Kilmacolm), Kylie Walker
(Buchanan Castle) and Lesley
Hendry (Routenburn), all on 147.
Megan was officially placed second
and Kylie third by virtue of their
second rounds, 72 and 73, to
Lesley’s 75.
It was Laura Murray’s second
Ness Open triumph in the past
three years. She also won the
event in 2006.
Curtis Cup player Michele Thomson
(McDonald Ellon), winner last
year, finished joint fifth on 148
alongside Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn
Dunbar).

DEATH OF MRS J
L (TONY) MOFFAT
It is with regret that we announce the death last
week of Mrs J L (Tony) Moffat of Aberdeen Ladies.
She was 85.
Tony was
Aberdeenshire Ladies County Golf Association
president from 1992-1993 and was one of the
leading figures on the club and county golf scene
for several decades. She was honoured for her
services to ladies' golf by being invited to
become a vice-president of the Scottish Ladies
Golfing Association last year, and was also an
honorary member of ALCGA.
She won the Aberdeenshire county championship
twice - in 1955 at Balgownie and in 1958 at Murcar.
She was also beaten finalist five times - most
recently at the age of 60 in 1983.
Tony was a stalwart of the Aberdeenshire county
team for many years. She was a member of the very
strong Shire team that won the Scottish county
championship for the first time at Elie in 1971
and also the following year when they made a
successful defence of the title in the finals at
Cruden Bay.
Tony was also a prominent figure in seniors and
veterans' golf. Her name will be perpetuated in
several championship trophies she presented. She
was a past president of the Scottish Veteran
Ladies Golf Association and the current president
of the Northern Division of the SVLGA.
In recent years she has been a dedicated supporter
of ladies golf, especially the county team. The
sight of Tony and her camper van, generously
giving people Werthers Originals, will be missed. |

Michele Thomson off to a
flying start in 2008
Michele Thomson,
Aberdeenshire's County Champion, has started off 2008 in
sparking form. Michele finished 3rd in the Portuguese
Women's Amateur open at the weekend and was the top placed
Scot in the field. During January Michele competed in the
Orange Blossom tour in Florida where she again notched up
a third place in the South Atlantic Ladies Amateur, then
went on to reach the quarter finals in the Jone's /
Doherty women's amateur match-play championship before
being knocked out by the eventual winner Isabelle Lendl.
Michele is a member of the LGU elite squad and her
excellent form should be making her a strong contender for
the Curtis cup team. |
