LIMITED DISTRICT ORIENTEERING EVENT AT

LANGDON HILLS, near BASILDON, ESSEX

(Incorporating Round 5 of ‘SWELL’, the South & West Essex Local League 2006-07)

DIRECTIONS: 
From M25 and London, etc: A13 eastbound: Drive east along the A13 until you reach the A13/A176 junction slip road which leads to the “Five Bells roundabout”. Turn right at the first roundabout, right again at the 2nd roundabout, and left at the 3rd roundabout onto the B1420 (Southend Road or “the old A13”). After 1 mile turn right at a small roundabout, over a small bridge and the orienteering car park is on your left. There are brown signs to Langdon Hills Country Park that start at the A13/A176 junction.
From Southend, etc: A13 westbound: Leave the A13 at the A176 junction and then follow the B1420.
From the A127: Take the A176 south through Basildon until you reach the A13/A176 junction and then follow the B1420 as above.
CAR PARK: Orienteering parking and registration are at the One Tree Hill lower car park. Grid Reference TQ 696 861. Orienteering Start & Finish are within walking distance of the car park.
Car parking is free though a donation towards the upkeep of the park would be welcome.
FACILITIES: Toilets are near the car park. Dogs welcome if under control.
Help available for beginners. 
MAP OCAD 1:10,000 fully updated autumn 2006 by John Pearce. Courses will be pre-marked on maps. Terrain is a mix of established woodland and open parkland with significant hills and other earth features. This is one of the highest points in Essex and there are excellent views of the Thames estuary.
COURSES: Suitable for adult and junior beginners, intermediate and more experienced orienteers.
Good range of colour-coded courses: White, Yellow, Orange, Light Green and Blue.
TIMES:
Registration 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Starts 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon.
Courses close 1:30 p.m.
ENTRY FEES:
Seniors £3:50
Independent (Non BOF) adults £5.50
Juniors £1.50
SI PUNCHING: Electronic punching will be used. SI card hire £1.00, juniors free
COACHING: There will also be a free orienteering ‘hints and tips’ session open to all at 12:00-1:30, led by coach Janet Biggs, which will focus on distance judgement.
