| Long Lee 9 v Wilsden 2 9th November 2003 (Cup match) | |||||||||
| Wilsden started well, Matty passed the ball wide to Matthew Holiday and his right foot shot beat the Long Lee keeper to open the scoring. Wilsden’s defence looked dodgy again and an attempt at pulling the off-side trap failed and Long Lee lobbed the ball over the advancing Chris Pickles to level the scoring. | |||||||||
| Long Lee took the lead from a corner when they scored with a header (unchallenged!!!). Will Stead ran on to a great through ball from James D but he screwed his shot wide, at the other end a sliced clearence went straight into the back of the net to give Long Lee a two goal advantage. Will Stead gave Wilsden hope after he neatly turned (with his right foot!) in a nice cross from Jack Pinkey to leave the half time score at 3-2. | |||||||||
| om a good contest in the first half, no one could have expected such a poor performance in the second half. Wilsden were simply outfought in every aspect of the game. Long Lee ran in six more goals which was disappointing for the manager Graham D’Arcy who must have been encouraged from Wilsden’s first half performance. | |||||||||
| Fundraising Committee | Three of the second half goals came from headers, highlighting a major weakness in the Wilsden defence (why won’t anyone head the ball?) | ||||||||
| The game ended in a shambles for Wilsden, let’s hope this is not a pattern for the season! | |||||||||
| Bankfoot 9 v Wilsden 0 16th November 2003 | |||||||||
| Wilsden played uphill in the first half and played right in to the sun. Chris Pickles pulled off a fine save early on and Mike cleared away the rebound preventing a certain goal. However Wilsden were unable to stop a rocket of a shot hitting the post and Bankfoot knocked in the rebound. Goals continued and Bankfoot were able to score at their own free will. A rare mistake by Chris Pickles allowed Bankfooot to score from a dead ball clearence but apart from this Chris was by far Wilsdens best player, what he must think sometimes when he sees the ball coming back to him so frequently! At half time the score was 0-5. | |||||||||
| Will Stead was replaced at half time but Bankfoot carried on in the same fashion and finished up easy winners, even if the ninth goal looked a dubious offside. | |||||||||
| Man of the match: Chris Pickles | |||||||||
| Eccleshill 4 v Wilsden 0 7th December 2003 | |||||||||
| Most of the Wilsden team arrived late due to poor directions and Joe Sutton didn’t arrive until we were already 1-0 down. Again as most matches this season, Eccleshill were the far hungrier team and they wanted the ball from dead ball situations and Wilsden were always second best in the tackling. Chris Pickles pulled off some good saves that kept the scoreline respectable and Wilsden tromped off trailing 0-2 at half time. | |||||||||
| The second half started brightly and Matty Holiday made some good raids down the right hand side and when he managed a decent cross no Wilsden forward could get on the end of it. Whilst Wilsden suffered in attack they were also suffered in defence and Eccleshill ran in two more goals to finish the game off, the third was a harsh decision from the referee, awarding a penalty to Eccleshill from a perfectly good tackle. | |||||||||
| Same old story for Wilsden, failing to tackle in the midfield, only Keelham would head the ball from a goal kick, Will, Matty and Tom all turning away from headers. | |||||||||
| Man of the match: Josh Halsworth | |||||||||
| Prospect 7 v Wilsden 2 14th December 2003 | |||||||||
| Wilsden suffered an early blow before the kick off loosing Chris Pickles to a stomach bug and Mike replaced him in goal. The manager tried a new formation using Tom and Matty Holiday as wing backs and playing Matty in the middle of the defence, Lewis played from the start. The first goal came from Wilsden’s poor defensive play and Prospect smashed a shot that went through Mike’s hands. The second goal was missed by yours truly (Mrs. Stead rang) and more goals were leaked by the defence and Wilsden trailed 4-0 at half time. | |||||||||
| With Wilsden playing with the wind in the second half they seemd to have a bit more confidence and started to pass the ball! Good work by Jack Pinkney lead to a penalty which James D stroked nicely into the right hand corner, were we in for a comeback? Unfortunately no, Prospect rattled in three more before Jack Pinkney scored a great consolation. | |||||||||
| There were good battling performances for Jack Pinkney, Will Stead and Matty Holiday but again due to Wilsden not ‘wanting’ the ball it was a lacklustre performance and Prospect thoroughly deserved their win. | |||||||||
| Man of the Match: Will Stead | |||||||||
| Wilsden 1 v Sedbergh 9 21st December 2003 | |||||||||
| A biting wind and no Chris Pickles or Josh Halsworth and Wilsden were up against it before the Kick-off. Graham D’Arcy had to referee due to the ‘real’ referee nursing a hangover from last nights Christmas festivities. It also seemed that the team had other things on their mind rather than football and this Sedbergh team were a much better outfit than when Wilsden narrowly lost a good match 3-4 earlier in the season. | |||||||||
| Sedbergh were at Wilsden from the KO and Kyle the ‘makeshift‘ keeper did well initially to thwart Sedbergh from taking an early lead. However it was only a matter of time before Kyle was reaching for the goal from the back of the net. Goals ‘reined’ in from all angles. Wilsden’s defence and midfield (those of them who could be bothered to get back into defence!) were punished time and again for failing to clear the ball and at half time Wilsden tromped off trailing 0-5. | |||||||||
| Graham gave the team a tongue lashing at half time but nothing really improved, Keelham and Joe Sutton did some good work in tackling but distribution was poor from everybody, hoofing it away rather than looking for a Wilsden player. Sedberg scored four more goals in the second half, including an own goal turned in neatly by Matty. Jack Pinkney scored a fine consolation goal from the edge of the area but this was one of the worst performances of the season and the holiday break couldn’t come any quicker. | |||||||||
| Man of the match was a hard working Joe Sutton. | |||||||||
| Wilsden 1 Bankfoot 4 11th January 2004 | |||||||||
| Wilsden were out for revenge after there thrashing back in November. However recent signings Tom Lewis (injured) and Matty Holiday (away) missed out so Wilsden were not at full strength. The referee arrived just in time and the kick off was only delayed by minutes. | |||||||||
| Wilsden started well (building on a good performance against Silsden the previous week) but they were unable to make the good early possession count. Mr. D'Arcy (the manager) kept referring to ‘the rope’ which I must admit went over my head but I’m sure the players understood his comments.... | |||||||||
| Bankfoot then came into the game and they scored a neat goal after Chris came rushing out to thwart the attack he was easily chipped to open the scoring. Bankfoot then got on top and after a succession of corners, Wilsden failed to clear (only Keelham showed courage by heading the ball) and they hammered in a bouncing ball to make it 0-2 at the interval. | |||||||||
| Unfortunately the second half started with another goal for Bankfoot, again poor marking from the Wilsden defence and Bankfoot scored from a header at the near post. This goal knocked the stuffing out of Wilsden and with the weather turning wintry it looked bleak… Hailstones the size of golf balls brought the team off for a short period and Wilsden returned to concede yet another goal. | |||||||||
| Jack Pinkney kept running for everything and his persistence resulted in him earning Wilsden a consolation with a well taken goal at the end. | |||||||||
| Keelham Dodsworth was named for man of the match (again!) for his courage a fearless tackling and heading. | |||||||||
| Heaton 7 v Wilsden 2 25th January 2004 | |||||||||
| Wilsden started well and closed Heaton down giving them little chance to show there skills however it was only a matter of time before Heaton scored and from a corner Wilsden failed to latch on to the ball first and Heaton smacked in the rebound. Thomas Kirk was substituted for Kyle, adding more steel to the midfield but again from a corner Wilsden were slow to react and Heaton scored again. | |||||||||
| Heaton had one very skillful player and he danced through the Wilsden defence to score an excellent solo goal. Wilsden’s defense were always under pressure and even though Keelham was throwing himself at everything he could not stop Heaton banging in another just before the break to make the score 4-0 at half time. | |||||||||
| Will Stead was subbed for a lacklustre first half but it could have been any outfield player who was substituted because Wilsden just did not compete in the first half. | |||||||||
| Heaton started the second half with a well taken goal and the referee failed to blow up for an obvious off side, this goal seemed to stir Wilsden up and Jack Pinkney finished neatly from a Matty Holiday cross. Wilsden still couldn’t stop the Heaton forwards and they quickly made it 6-1 from a swift break. | |||||||||
| Wilsden's attacking play improved and they began to put some decent interchanges of passing together but nothing came of it and Heaton made it 7-1 with a goal mouth scramble. | |||||||||
| Wilsden weren’t finished yet Matt Holiday had an excellent second half and he rounded off his fine performance with a great shot that flew in to the net. Wilsden finished the game with some confidence and hopefully this will give them encouragement for the next game against Bingley. | |||||||||
| Matt Holiday was named man of the match for his second half performance and fine goal. | |||||||||
| Bingley 9 v Wilsden 0 1st February 2004 | |||||||||
| A big pitch awaited Wilsden and they were without their influential captain Josh Hasworth, Keelham stepped in to captain the team. | |||||||||
| Bingley played with two wide men so the manager counteracted by playing Will and Matty as wing backs. Will not used to tracking back was caught out for the first goal and didn’t mark the right winger and he got on the end of a cross to open the scoring. Wilsden then battled well against a fine Bingley side, they passed the ball well and made space and intelligent runs and opened up Wilsden time after time. Good defending kept the scoreline down and Will actually headed well clear from a corner!!!! Matty Holiday also cleared a certain goal by heading clear from the goal line. Bingley’s second goal again came from the right and Will again was unaware of the attacker behind him and before he knew where he was it was 2-0. More talking in the Wilsden defense may have prevented this goal. Half time 2-0. | |||||||||
| The manager was encouraged by this performance but it was backs against the wall and he changed the formation, switching to an orthodox 4-4-2. Unfortunately this opened the flood gates for Bingley and once they realized that the Wilsden defense were not the quickest they started to chip the ball over the defense and run on to through balls and seemed to score at ease. The final scoreline was 9-0 but Chris Pickles pulled off some fine saves to keep it in ‘single figures’. Wilsden tired in the latter stages and their heads went down, disappointing after a good first half performance. | |||||||||
| Chris Pickles was named of man of the match for his excellent saves. | |||||||||
| Bingley 3 v Wilsden 1 8th February 2004 (1st round of the Egg Cup) | |||||||||
| Wilsden new what to expect this time having tasted defeat on the same pitch only a week ago. The manager had to switch his team around at the last minute, star player Keelham Dodsworth cried off with a twisted ankle so Jack Pinkney replaced him in the heart of defence playing alongside captain Joshua Halsworth and his five shirts! The eleven that played had to manage without any substitutions, Michael Healy failed to appear. | |||||||||
| Wilsden started with a 4-4-2 formation and they held Bingley with some stalwart defending, Joe Sutton battled particularly well and Jack Pinkney made some fine clearances at the back. However even with all the great defending Wilsden were unable to stop Bingley’s first goal, a striker latched on to a loose ball and all Chris could do was watch it sail over his head. For a change Wilsden didn’t cave in, they battled well in midfield, Will Stead cleared well from a corner (he’s still got the mark on his forehead!) and they began to push forward into Bingley’s half. Fine work by Will and Tom Ellison brought Wilsden an opening, Tom managed to whip a ball into the area and Tom Lewis was first to the ball and he side footed the ball into the back of the net, were Bingley heading out of the cup? Half time 1-1 | |||||||||
| Wilsden were playing with the wind in the second half and really fancied their chances but unfortunately they couldn’t penetrate the Bingley defence other than with hopeful punts up field and it was Bingley that began to push forward and look the more threatening team. Bingley scored two more goals and at times it was a carbon copy of last week but Chris made some fine saves and Jack Pinkney (playing his best game for Wilsden for some time) prevented the score line from being even wider than 3-1 at the finish. | |||||||||
| Wilsden must take great hope from this game, Bingley were very strong but the performance and result was much better than the previous weeks mauling. Jack Pinkney deservedly got man of the match (will Keelham get his place back?) there were also fine performances from Joe Sutton, Will Stead & Tom Ellison (first half) and Chris Pickles (as usual), Josh Halsworth and Matty, in fact everyone battled really well and must be proud of their performances. | |||||||||
