Saturday 20th November: Myrtle Park 1 v 2 Wilsden (Friendly)   Scorers: Seamus Wild, George Stead

Sponsors

On a cool but bright November morning, the teams changed ends after the toss and Wilsden attacked the School end. The pattern of the match in the first half was fairly constant pressure by the visitors, with the home team occasionally breaking out and threatening the Wilsden goal, led ably by the superb dribbling skills of George Stead and the powerful running of Tom.

Squad Pages

Midway through the first half, George Stead was unnecessarily up-ended just inside the home box. The referee had no alternative but to award a penalty. Unfortunately, the kick was not as strong as it perhaps might have been and the keeper saved easily. A let-off for the home side!

But there was more bad luck for Wilsden. The referee was a bit late whistling for a corner, with the ensuing cross ending up crossing the goal-line despite the best efforts of the home 'keeper. The referee was apologetic for the late whistle; these things sometimes happen and you just have to get on with the game!
Fundraising Committee Christian was also putting in a terrier-like performance in midfield and was assisted in this by Seamus, in only his second appearance of the season. Matthew had a good debut in the first half, with Graham the other defender also performing well. Half-time came with the score somewhat inexplicably goalless, scant reward for Wilsden's pressure, possession and attempts at goal.
The manager pepped up the boys at half-time, reminding them to keep passing well.
The second half was only two minutes old when a defender was caught dwelling on possession, got robbed and the home team scored from the breakaway. 1 - 0  to Myrtle Park!
To Wilsden's credit, it only took 3 minutes for the visitors to reply, with Seamus sneaking a shot form around 10 yards just inside the post to equalise. The next goal was going to be important!
The home team performed a lot better in the second half, and counter-attacked well, only some finishing of dubious quality enabling the score to remain unchanged.
However, with Tom having numerous efforts going close in the second half as well as the first, he eventually turned provider. He put in a good, hard, low cross from the right. Confusion reigned in the home defence and George drilled home a low shot from around twelve yards. There were 4 minutes left. Would there be another goal?
To be fair, the home team had a couple of efforts that could have ended up with an equaliser, but the final effort of the match was a good strike from Tom. The clearance eventually went out for a throw and the referee blew for full-time.
A good all-round performance by Wilsden and a well-deserved, if narrow, victory. Well played, boys!
Man of the Match: Seamus Wild
March 12th: Myrtle Park 1 v 2 Wilsden   Scorers: Christian Sutton & Thomas Davidson
This match was played on a cold, but clear morning, with the addition of a chilling breeze. It was a closely fought battle, with, according to the manager, an undeserved winner from Thomas Davidson two minutes from time. Earlier, Christian Sutton had scored with a header. The poor performance did not warrant a man of the match award.
