Undercliffe 0 - 2 Wilsden B  28th September 2003

With a team missing some regular players drafted in to play for the A team, this was a great performance and a great result. The opposition only being able to field 6 players, the commitment to the cause by Wilsden’s players (and parents!) in having a squad of 8 available for this match is to be applauded.

Squad Pages

The match was played on a sunny morning with little wind, the start having been delayed by the late appearance of the goals and nets. Undeterred, the side started well with good cover in front of goal, making life a little uneventful for Joe Parkes, who was the number 1 for the day in place of the normal ‘keeper, who was unavailable.

Generally speaking, Wilsden had much of the territorial advantage for the greater part of the match, with Alex Hosty in particular making some good runs. Matthew Lathem, similar to the ‘keeper, was rarely called upon in the first half, but made some good tackles when it counted. The midfield was well contested, with both William Jeeps and the Sams (Sharp, Miller, Ibbotson and Whitaker) making good contributions, William also shooting wide when in a good position. Undercliffe also had a few spells of pressure, forcing some corners which were ably dealt with, the whole of the team helping out in defence.
Fundraising Committee The extra players made it easier for the away team, with substitutions coming at regular intervals to keep players fresh and maintain the balance of the side. It was toward the end of the first half that the deadlock was broken, Alex Hosty scoring from close to goal on the inside right position.
    Half-time: Undercliffe 0 – 1 Wilsden B
The second half saw Wilsden playing up the slope, slight though it was, but the red and blue tide kept surging forward. By now, Sam Ibbotson was adopting a slightly more defensive role, helping to marshall alongside Matthew Lathem and poor Joe Parkes was getting extremely bored with very little to do.
Everybody worked extremely hard again in the second half of this keenly (but fairly) fought contest. There were only a couple of minor stoppages for the Undercliffe players to recover from tumbles resulting from strong challenges, but there was never any hint of indiscipline from either side.
With less than a couple of minutes of play to go, Alex Hosty completed his brace, again with a well-taken goal into the goalkeeper’s bottom right hand corner from inside the six yard box.
This was the cue for Joe to be relieved of boredom and exchange shirts with Matthew Lathem and finally get to have a runaround, a change which could easily have ended in disaster. Matthew cleared upfield from goal, but was left stranded as an Undercliffe player returned the ball past him with interest. It was only the speed of thinking and pace of Alex Hothy, by now under instruction to defend, that maintained a clean sheet, clearing from about 18 inches form his own goalline to concede what turned out to be a last minute corner.
    Man of the Match.
Parents were asked early in the game to give some thought to their man of the match, with votes to be collected in a few minutes before the end of the game. Although the whole team played very well on the day, the parents’ clear winner was Alex Hosty, who was presented with the trophy at the end of the game. The votes had already been collected before his last minute clearance, which only goes to underline what a good match he had. Well done, Alex!
