October 3rd - Oakworth B 2 v 1 Wilsden Blues Scorer:  Nick Hahn (pen)

Wilsden competed well on a cool Sunday morning on the exposed pitch at Oakworth.

Squad Pages

The home side took an early lead with an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. Despite some good approach play, the Wilsden attack could not break through with their shots from distance and appeared to have the advantage territorially, forcing numerous corners on either flank. Half-time: 1 - 0.

League Links

The manager gave the team a lot of encouragement during the break and early in the second half, a good run into the penalty area earned a penalty for a foul on the late-arriving substitute, Alex Hosty. Nick Hahn duly scored from the spot kick, despite the home ‘keeper getting a hand to it.
Fundraising Committee Wilsden then continued to attack during the half, with Oakworth breaking dangerously at frequent intervals. However, the manager’s advice to take the ball on further before shooting was not heeded well enough for a goal to be scored. A long ball over the top of the Wilsden defence, who had inexplicably pushed up to the halfway line, a minute from time led to a cross-shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net. With barely a minute of play left, it proved impossible for the Blues to get an equaliser. A disappointing result for all of the effort put in by the team.
Man of the Match: Alex Hosty
October 10th - Wilsden Blues 5 v 1 Shipley Tigers Scorers: Sam Whitaker, Alex Hosty (2), Nick Hahn, Cameron Butterfield
The Blues played up the slope with a following wind in the first half and raced into a 3 - 0 lead, with an opener from Sam Whitaker with Nick Hahn and Alex Hosty also finding the back of the net. Overconfidence may have taken over, as the Shipley Tigers, receiving good vocal support from players and managers alike scored a goal either side of half-time to get the score back to 3 - 2 early in the second half. Was a comeback on the cards with the downward slope in the second half?
Wilsden seemed to re-gather their thoughts and managed to restore their two-goal half-time lead and finally killed the game off with a fifth not long before the final whistle, despite a number of potentially dangerous breaks by Shipley, whose attitude was good throughout the game.
Man of the Match: Sam Whitaker
    October 10th Wyke Wolves 6 v 0 Wilsden Blues
Again, a windy morning overlooking the M62 at our hosts ground saw the home team take a well-deserved 7th minute lead, which was doubled not long before the half-time interval with a shot sneaking just inside the post from the edge of the box following a set piece move. Most Wilsden attacks ended up with shots from distance which rarely troubled the opposing ‘keeper. Half-time: 2 - 0.
Another couple of goals early in the second half doubled the deficit for Wilsden. The Blues managed to apply some good, consistent pressure in the form of a good number of corner kicks in the latter part of the second half, without the home defence being able to relieve the pressure. Unfortunately, the pressure was not turned into goals and a couple of breakaways by the home side resulted in goals in the last few minutes of the game, at least one of which should have been prevented by better defending by the defence. The manager put this result down to experience, with a view to future improvement.
Man of the Match: George Trudgill
October 31st  - Wilsden Blues 6 v 0 Sutton B  Scorers: Sam Whitaker (2), Nick Hahn (3) and George Trudgill
As in their last home game, the Blues kicked up the slope in the first half, and, as in their last home game, had the opposition under pressure from the kick off. The similarities did not end there, though. Sam Whitaker scored the opener after 7 minutes, and Nick Hahn got the second in the 13th minute. After a quarter of an hour, though, the parallels finally ended. Nick Hahn scored from a free kick given for a foul just outside the penalty area, with, admittedly, the help of a big deflection. Wilsden applied more pressure, with Sutton only occasionally being able to break out of their own half. Half-time: 3 - 0.
The manager was very pleased with the first half performance and encouraged the team to give the same amount of effort, and teamwork in the second half. This was duly given by the Blues, who again gave very little chance of attack to their yellow-shirted opponents. The attacks came in waves, with clearances only reaching the last line of Wilsden's defence, which had pushed up to the halfway line, such was the home side's dominance.
The first goal of the half was scored by George Trudgill, who turned the ball in with his left foot from about ten yards. A few minutes later, Nick completed his hat-trick with a goal from close range after the ball had bobbled around Sutton's penalty area and the final score being the second of Sam Whitaker's brace. Joe Parkes in the Wilsden goal, standing in for regular 'keeper Sam Ruthven, had an uneventful game. Ben McGonigle made a sound debut, with some solid tackles and good distribution. All of the scorers played well and the whole team put in a magnificent performance, but for his distribution and all round play, the award of man of the match went to William Jeeps.
Man of the Match: William Jeeps
November 7th: Burley Hawks 1 v 3 Wilsden Blues Scorers: Cameron Butterfield, George Trudgill and Sam Whitaker
A week back at school had obviously done no favours to most of the team in the first half, which was played on a dry, mild November morning, but on a heavy pitch, a result of the vast quantities of rain that had fallen in the area recently.
The quality of play was such that this reporter had no distinctively memorable action. Half-time: 0 - 0.
David gave the team a lot of encouragement during the half-time break; it appeared to inspire the players. (Well done David!) The Blues looked much more like the team that had won convincingly just seven days before, but this time the opposition played better. A fortunate clearance from a Burley attack ran clear to Cameron, who, despite still being in his own half, had only the goalkeeper to beat. His electric pace kept him clear of the chasing pack and from just inside the box he buried the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net. What a goal!
The game ebbed and flowed and around five minutes later, an attack led to a dead ball situation. Nick Hahn crossed the ball in hard and low. The ball somehow managed to reach George Trudgill at the far post. He swivelled and scored from close range with his left foot. 2 - 0 to the Blues.
Burley broke away again. With the Blues defence pushing too far up, there was no cover for goalie Joe Parkes. the defence somehow managed to get back, but the ball was turned into the net in the ensuing melee, only the second goal of the season for the home team. The home crowd, quite rightly, applauded with gusto. 2 - 1. The pressure was back on!
Around five minutes from time, in the middle of the Burley defence, Sam Whitaker scored from close range to restore the two-goal cushion that the away team deserved.
Just before the final whistle, it looked all on for a fourth goal for the visitors. The break this time was by Nick Hahn, but the finish wasn't there and the shot went tamely past the near post. The referee immediately blew for full time and the points were the Blues'.
Sam Ruthven had a good agme playing outfield for the first time this season, but the man of the match went to Cameron not just for his terrific goal but also because he played on despite picking up a few bumps and bruises along the way before he scored.
Man of the Match: Cameron Butterfield
    14th November: Wilsden Blues 2 v 0 Thackley Scorers: Sam Whitaker, o.g.
This match was played on a cold November morning with the Blues again kicking up the slope on a heavy pitch in the first half. After some good early pressure, which saw our opponents concede early corners, much of the rest of the first half saw the Blues give a sound defensive display to keep Thackley at bay.
Shots were blocked by Ben McGonigle, William Jeeps, Alex Hosty, Joe McKalroy and Matthew Lathem and probably the rest of the team(!) in turn, with some attempts to run the ball out of defence coning unstuck and putting the rest of the team under pressure.
One good break did see a shot, from Alex Hosty, strike the inside of the post and rebound into the arms of a grateful visiting ‘keeper. Half-time: 0 - 0.
Again, Dave encouraged all the players for the hard work in the first half and told them they had the advantage of kicking downhill in the second half.
The second half kicked off, with a similar pattern but in reverse. The Blues did much of the attacking, but the visitors, had their moments in attack. There was not long to go when Sam Whitaker (again!) opened the scoring in a home match, turning in from close range somewhat fortunately whilst semi-prone following a dead ball situation.
This seemed to inspire the Blues more than their opponents, who now had a period of pressure attacking the visitors’ goal. Some of this pressure was in the form of a number of corners. A low kick was turned away by a visiting defender to concede another corner on the Blues’ right. George Trudgill put a better ball in, this time; harder but slightly higher than the previous daisy cutter. A distraught Thackley defender, however, sliced this one past his own ‘keeper. 2 - 0 to the Blues.
With only two minutes left, the fight had gone from Thackley and time was played out with no further incident of note. The visitors, for their plucky first half display, could well have returned home feeling somewhat aggrieved by their bad luck in front of goal, but, as the saying goes, "the harder you work, the luckier you seem to get" and this applied to the Blues on the day. Well done, boys!
Man of the Match: Ben McGonigle.
28th November: Wilsden Blues 6 v 1 Guiseley Whites Scorers: Nick Hahn (3), Alex Hosty (2) and Sam Whitaker
Wilsden again kicked up the slope in the first half and were two goals to the good within the first five minutes. The first was a penalty, given for a trip in the box on Alex Hosty, the second a break from near the halfway line. Both were scored by Nick Hahn.
Much of the rest of the half was a ding-dong battle of attack and counter-attack, with Guiseley netting a goal not too long before the break for half-time. Was this the start of a famous comeback, in view of their runaway early season success when they were the hosts? Half-time 2 - 1.
As ever, the boys received a lot of encouragement from David during the break. It immediately paid dividends, with a run down the right by Nick Hahn, who then ventured into the box. Instead of crossing the ball, the most likely route to success, given the narrow angle, he shot. The ‘keeper was, unfortunately for him, nutmegged, and the ball nestled in the goal, hitting the side netting just beyond the far post. 3 - 1 to the Blues and Nick’s hat-trick!
Again, more attack and counter-attack, with a chance for Alex just begging to be scored from being hit straight at the goalie. It turned out that it didn’t matter too much, as, just a few minutes later, a chance of a similar nature was buried in the corner, followed by another shortly thereafter, both of this brace being bagged by Alex Hosty.
With the referee giving a "one-minute" warning, this seemed to galvanise the Blues. Another raid was launched on the Guiseley defence on the counter-attack from the Wilsden right. This time the finish was applied by Sam Whitaker, who has now scored in the last four home games.
George Helliwell had his best game for the club to date, putting in some tremendous tackles, clearing well from defence and launching the odd attack here and there by dribbling his way out of trouble. It goes without saying that, for his hat-trick alone, Nick had a good game, as did Alex. However, for his tremendous work in defence, committed tackling, etc. Joe McKalroy was awarded the Man of the Match award.
Man of the Match: Joe McKalroy
16th January: Menston/Guiseley 1 v 4 Wilsden Blues  Scorers: Cameron Butterfield, Alex Hosty, George Trudgill & William Jeeps

Following their "seasonal winter break" The Blues followed their fine win in the previous weeks friendly against Myrtle Park with another sterling performance.

Right from the kick off the team showed real purpose. Very early on George Trudgill shot & hit the post before shortly afterwards putting Blues 1-0 up with a sweet left foot strike .

Following early Wilsden pressure, Menston began to come into the game & the contest was fairly even for much of the first half.

Alex Hosty then featured twice in quick succession firstly providing a lovely cross which George T hit just wide & then breaking away on a lovely solo run & chipping a lovely dipping shot over the keeper into the Menston net to make the score 2-0.

Just before the break Menston exerted more pressure in an effort to get back into the game & had one or two shots go just wide of the post.

In the 2nd half Blues were playing uphill & as expected were put under pressure from Menston. They won several consecutive corners which were well defended by a resolute Wilsden defence.

Throughout the match Wilsden produced several excellent counter attacks & one of these resulted in a fine goal from Cameron Butterfield to make it 3-0.

Whilst Blues were now well in control Menston continued to break menacingly & Joe Parkes was called on to make a fine save at his near post. Joe McKalroy, Sam Ruthven & George Halliwell all made important clearances to help keep Menston at bay.

Another break down the left involving the ever lively Nick Hahn resulted in a loose ball coming out to William Jeeps in space who took a touch & then hit a lovely looping shot into the net to give Wilsden a 4-0 lead.

Menston kept coming forward & their pressure finally brought them a consolation goal. Having won a throw the ball came into the Wilsden penalty area & failure to clear the ball resulted in a bouncing ball being hooked into the net taking the score to 4-1.

Menston continued to press but the Blues stood firm finishing the game strongly as 4-1 winners.

This was another good solid performance from a young Wilsden side who appear to be growing in confidence with every game. They have some tough fixtures coming up over the coming weeks but with performances like this & continued hard work & team spirit who knows what they can achieve?

30th January: Shipley Tigers 2 v 1 Wilsden Blues   Scorer:
    Man of the Match:
    6th February: Wilsden Blues 1 v 1 Wyke Wolves   Scorer: o.g.
For the low number of goals, this was as good a match at this level as one can expect. This was a thrilling game played out on a cold, crisp morning, with attack after attack by the Blues and counter-attacking by the opposition, who although participating in an excellent match, never really resembled the team that won 6 - 0 at Wyke in the goalless first half that the home side dominated. Blues had a hatful of chances, none of which were converted. Is this a reflection of how much the Blues have improved?
After half-time, the home team kicked up the hill in the second half. The away team started to show a bit more form early in the second half; similar to the Blues in the first half, a handful of good goal-scoring opportunities went begging for the Wolves and the game looked like petering out into a draw with less than ten minutes remaining, when the first controversial incident occurred.
A goalmouth scramble ended up with Joe, Wilsden's number 1, clutching the ball what looked like perilously close to being over the goalline. The referee ruled that it had not crossed the line, much to the consternation of the visiting parents, who made their feelings felt! The referee halted the game to ask for order to be restored, explaining that he was a mere 3 feet away from the incident and was best placed to decide. Five minutes before time, the Blues won a corner on their left, and a Wolves defender was unfortunate to put the ball over the line and into the bottom right corner.
With only a couple of minutes left, Wolves forced a corner on their right. The ball was played in at chest height and was handled by a defender raising his arms in the box. Penalty! The referee marked out where the spot kick should be taken from. The Wolves player then hit a ferocious drive into the middle of the goal, which, despite the keeper's most valiant efforts, he was unable to keep out. It certainly warmed his hands at the end of a cold morning, but he was desperately disappointed not to have saved it and won the day for his team. Unlucky, Joe, but a great effort! A magnificent team performance, which, given the number of missed chances by both teams, could easily have ended up with either team winning all three points. Was a draw a fair result?

13th February: Sutton B 0 v 5 Wilsden Blues   Scorers: Cameron Butterfield, Alex Hosty (2), Nick Hahn & Sam Whitaker
Another cold February morning, but a later kick-off than usual meant a lie-on for both players and parents. The pitch resembled a quagmire, (reminiscent of the Baseball Ground at Derby for the older readers!) and made fast flowing football that little bit more difficult, though the Blues managed on many occasions to rise to the task. After a fairly even opening few minutes, a good attack was built down the Wilsden left, and was ended by Alex's cross being very neatly turned into the bottom right corner from the inside left position by Cameron Butterfield. Numerous attacks then followed from the team in the "Barcelona" stripes, with the yellow-shirted Sutton starting to find it difficult to live with the visitors. Half-time was reached with the score still stuck at 1 - 0 to the Blues. The manager pepped up the team at half-time. They were told that they could win by three to four clear goals; but would there be any effect?
Fairly early on in the second half, Alex Hosty netted from the inside left position to give the Blues the comfort of a two-goal lead. Cue pressure on the home defence and it wasn't long after that he crossed from the right, beating the 'keeper on his near post to make it 3 - 0. Only he will know if it was meant or not! A brace for the smallest player on the park.
Sutton then exerted a bit of pressure of their own; a ball was played through the middle and Alex, who had minutes earlier taken a strong challenge, was outpaced by Nick Hahn who coolly planted the ball in the bottom corner for a 4 - 0 lead.
To round the game off, a magnificently weighted ball by Ben McGonigle was pounced on by Sam Whitaker who outpaced the home defence, who had pushed well up by then, to put the ball coolly through the keeper's legs for 5 - 0.
This win obviously exceeded the manager's expectations; a reflection of the team's willingness to work together and a great improvement in many areas of play on an individual basis as well.
Man of the Match: George Trudgill
      20th February: Otley 2 v 1 Wilsden Blues   Scorer:
Man of the Match: Joe Parkes
6th March: Thackley 1 v 2 Wilsden Blues   Scorers: Nick Hahn & Alex Hosty
This match was played on a pitch that was muddy at the car park end and fully grassed at the far end; it was mostly sunny, with a bit of cloud later on in the match.
The Blues had the majority of the territiorial advantage in the first half and made that advantage count midway through the half. An attack was broken down by the home defence and the 'keeper cleared to almost halfway. However, Alex made a great tackle and played a lovely ball through the middle. Nick Hahn latched onto it and put a powerful shot past the 'keeper to his left. 1 - 0  to the Blues!
A further period of pressure led to a corner on the Wilsden left about three minutes later. It was left for Alex Hosty to take; his inswinging corner bamboozled the home defence and nestled in the bottom corner. 2 - 0 to Wilsden.
Thackley rarely threatened the away 'keeper, and up to half-time it always looked more likely that the away team would add to the score, rather than the home team get back into the game. Half time: Thackley 0 - 2 Wilsden.
Dave's interval team talk sounded familiar; think of the game as starting again at 0 - 0 and try to score. Nick led the team back on for the second half encouraging the team to do even better in the second half.
What a difference in the home side after half time! Joe and the defence were put under pressure for long periods and managed only counter-attacks that ended with little reward for the stripe-shirted visitors. Corners were conceded at regular intervals, but the visitors were resolute in their defence until early in the last quarter of the game.
A ball was pumped forward into the Wilsden penalty area and Joe (McKalroy) accidentally (and probably totally unitentionally) handled the ball in controlling and clearing it. The ensuing shot from the clearance went wide, but the referee blew for the spot-kick.
The ball was blasted into the bottom corner, giving Joe Parkes no chance whatsoever, despite guessing correctly. 2 - 1 to the visitors.
It was the last quarter of the game that the Blues really earned their colours, with wave upon wave of home attacks being repelled by the visiting team. It wasn't just defenders, but midfield and attack were also drawn back into their own box and just outside. Tackles and clearances from Joe Mckalroy, Matthew Lathem, Sam Ruthven and Alex Hosty were memorable and equally important.
It was only, in what turned out to be the last two minutes of the match, that Wilsden managed to relieve the pressure with some breaks form defence of their own, one pass sending Nick clear but shooting wide from a narrow angle. In the fianl minute, a free kick was awarded to the Blues on the left. The ball was cleared and fell again to Nick, who put in a high, looping shot that was destined for the goal until a tall defender cleared over the bar. There was no time for the corner to be taken, and the visitors can feel relieved, but very proud, to have come away with all of the points. This team has come on a long way this season and it would not have been inimaginable for them to have crumbled under the onslaught they withstood today had this game been played earlier in the season. Well done, boys!
Man of the Match: Nick Hahn
      13th March: Wilsden Blues 1 v 5 Otley B   Scorer: Cameron Butterfield
Man of the Match: Matthew Lathem
      20th March: Wilsden Blues 0 v 2 Oakworth
The Blues scarcely deserved the bad luck they had in this match. Despite the scoreline, they hit the post twice, once in each half. Both were from corners, the first from Nick Hahn. The visitors scored once in each half, the second being a breakaway just a couple of minutes from time, following an extended period of pressure from the home team. They will play worse and get a better result in future matches, but that's football.
Man of the Match: George Trudgill
3rd April: Wilsden Blues 1 v 1 Burley Hawks   Scorer: William Jeeps
This game was played on a breezy, cool, but bright morning. The Blues had countless corners and pressure in the first half, but fell behind in the 16th minute when Burley raided down the left. Joe came out of goal, with the ball nearly out of play, but the skill of the visitors' attacker allowed him to squeeze a shot past the near post. Half-time 0- 1.
The second half saw the Blues playing down the slope. They attacked with gusto for long periods, the visitors' defence playing well and belying their lowly position in the table. Their attack was also quite sharp when they managed to break away from their own box. Time was running out and the Blues looked like getting another undeserved defeat at home when another period of prolonged pressure on the Burley goal ended with yet another set piece. defence and midfield alike crowded the box and just outside it. The ball was only half-cleared to the edge of the box, where, with a couple of touches to control and set up a shot, William Jeeps placed a low shot into the bottom left corner through the body-littered box.
Despite their best efforts, including a shot put wide by Alex Hosty when bursting into the area from the right when three teammates were waiting in the middle (or was it a mis-hit cross?), the Blues could not find a winner. So credit goes to both sides, with the teams finishing the season without losing. This team could and should do even better next season. Keep it up, lads!
