TeamRoversReturn

Who are you?

We are TeamRoversReturn! Husband and wife team of banger ralliers extraordinaire - Kevin Woolley (aka Badly Drawn Kev) and Hannah Barton (aka Spotty Banana).

What is a Banger Rally?

Basically teams compete in a series of treasure hunt style challenges in a four day drive across Europe in a car that cost less £100. Click HERE for a better explanation from the StreetSafari web-site.

Why?

Because it's a great laugh!

Any other reason?

Yes - we try and raise a bit of money for Mind - the leading mental health charity in England and Wales.

Why Mind?

Because Hannah is mad! See our charity page for more details.....

What car have you got?

A 1992 Rover 820 - bought on Ebay in February 2005. This will be the third year we have used the car having competed in the Staples 2 Naples banger rally in 2005 and 2006. Since we bought the car it has clocked up almost 10 000 miles - 7 000 on a banger rally or returning home from one.

Why a Rover 820?

A few reasons.

Firstly, my dad used to have one that was his pride and joy so I got a certain sense of satisfaction from telling him we'd bought a car like his for £100 and we intended to trash it.

Secondly, I knew they were big, comfortable cars that could easily cope with long distances involved.

Other good points are that It has a manual gearbox - so was better for the Alpine passes than an auto-box, not excessively thirsty being the 2 ltre engine and it is still fairly easy to source parts or find them in scrap-yards.

Has it been modified?

A bit...... The only real mechanical modification is that it has the beefier radiator and twin radiator fan from a Rover 827 to help with the cooling demands whilst driving through the Swiss Alps.Cosmetically - it has undergone somewhat of a transformation. For the 2005 rally a few stickers were added and a bit of graffitti. It was painted matt black with Hammerite flames from the wheel arches in February 2006 and, then later, a lot of stickers, a few extra lights on the roof and musical air horns added for the 2006 rally.

For the 2007 Rally a few more lights and a spoiler have been added..... we have a few more toys to bolt on before the rally but you'll have to wait to see what - we don't want to spoil the surprise.

Have you had to do a lot of work on the car?

Surprisingly little.... other than regular service parts and consumables (tyres, brake pads, oil, filters, brake fluid etc). Since the 2006 rally I have replaced the crank sensor and a very worn CV joint and I need to patch a hole in the exhaust.

Where did the nick-names come from?

Hannah was called Spotty Banana at school - because banana almost rhymes with Hannah and, because kids are horrible, the spotty bit got added. The name Badly Drawn Kev is only a few years old. Basically, I used to wear a beanie-type hat that was similar to the one worn by Badly Drawn Boy. After walking into a pub where a large group of friends had gathered Neil shouted "Hey - it's Badly Drawn Kev" much to amusement of the rest of the group - this stuck for a while and coincided with needing a name for the Banger Rally Forum - so Badly Drawn Kev was chosen.....

And the team name?

The first rally we were called the Angelic Jumpstarts. When we decided to do the rally again in the same car - then we became The Rover Returns... we are not in any associated with a fictional pub.

Can we follow your progress during the rally?

Hopefully! In 2006 we tried to keep the web site updated during the rally but our efforts were thwarted by the lack of WiFi availability. This year we hope to keep our Facebook group page updated using WAP via a mobile phone (if we can get the bloody technology working).

How about a 'normal' holiday?

Well, funny you should ask that! Every time we get back we say "never again" and " next year we will have a fortnight on a beach in Greece!". Then, just before the Rally Registration time, we find ourselves changing our mind..
