Near Auchinstarry. When I visited this swan who I had been watching over a number of months while she was sitting on her eggs, one particular day when I passed, all of her eggs had hatched bar one. As you know the mother sits on the nest for weeks on end and is in need of nourishment, this can affect their wings and feathers, when she realises that the egg is sterile, she breaks it and eats it. As mentioned I had saw her with her three cygnets a few days previous and on this occasion I had great fear that she had lost all three survivors but I stayed awhile and watched her. Glad I did. The three missing cygnets were tucked under her wings.

This is a race which takes place on the canal from Kirkintilloch to Grangemouth. Lots of teams take part in this including the Territorial Army and charitable organisations, raising funds. The print was taken between Twechar and Auchinstarry.

77
Forth and Clyde canal between Auchinstarry and the village of Twechar. The mother swan in centre of print leads her young cygnets to safety as the male swan defends their territory against an intruder. Normally this is not a serious condition as the birds confront each other enlarging their mass in order to appear much larger than they are. It is in some ways like the notes of music, the birds in unison move in all directions. I have seldom saw any serious territorial fights, most often one of the birds turn and swim off.

Iron age fort, the trees skyline. The Lade running into the Forth and Clyde canal. The road in the print is the old Coach Road leading from Kilsyth crossing the Forth and Clyde canal towards the village of Dullatur, this particular point at Craigmarloch was one of the recreational points on the Forth and Clyde canal with a tearoom and dance hall which was visited by the many day trippers from the city of Glasgow on the Gipsy Queen. The leader of the group who entertained the passengers was a man by the name of Tony Capaldi.

The ruined stable at Craigmarloch. There is a few of these buildings along the line of the Forth and Clyde canal, one in particular which is in reasonably good condition is the one between Kirkintilloch and Twechar. From time to time organisations have tried to buy these buildings and convert them for recreational purposes, thankfully this has failed but now with the upgrading of the canal, there is a possibility of constructive moves to have these old historical buildings renovated into a positive venture which will benefit visitors and locals alike.

90
The hills on skyline is the line of the old Roman fort beneath which rungs the Forth and Clyde canal, the work being carried out in the print is the diversion of the River Kelvin in order to lay a heavy concrete tunnel which will run under the new road construction why bypasses the village of Auchinstarry.

This is a shell of what was to become the Gipsy Princess, it is I believe, the first time the boat was used on the Forth and Clyde canal. They took the boat to the road bridge at Auchinstarry which even without being completed, could not go through the bridge.
