DULLATUR

1
The Village of Dullatur, was the home of some of Glasgows rich and famous. The building in the print sits on the hillside looking north towards the Kilsyth Hills, and overlooking the Forth and Clyde Canal. The village seems to have become very popular by 1842 with the introduction of the Glasgow Edinburgh rail line. There are a few interesting villas in the village, one of which is Dunluce, designed by Alexander "Greek" Thomson. The man himself Alexander Thomson was orientated by his love of Greek architecture. This showed through in virtually every building he designed. Today the village is a modern architectural haven with some fine examples demonstrating todays luscious house building. It is still very much a place for the well off and I must say it is a very desirable locality as it is perched on the hillside and somewhat secluded from the heavy volumes of traffic. The name Dullatur is from the Gaelic "Dubh Leitir" meaning dark hill on the slope.

This is pit waste extracted from the mines that lie beneath the village. The mine is now disused and has been sealed off from late 60s early 70s. (When the men were digging out the coal seams, they could always tell what time it was by the trains that ran from the north of Scotland to London in the south.
