About Us
The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 gave legal protection to bats and their roosts. In order to monitor the effect on the bat population and to make the public aware of the new legislation, Bat Groups were formed all over the country. Several attempts to found a Bat Group in the Milton Keynes area in the 1980s proved unsuccessful.
The passing of the Countryside and Rights Of Way Act in 2000 caused this to be reviewed again. Aylesbury Vale District Council identified a lack of trained bat workers in their District and Milton Keynes. With the aid of some seed-funding from English Nature, they started up the voluntary "Parish Bat Warden" scheme in 2001/2002, with the aim of providing a trained bat worker in each parish within the Vale.
In 2003, the Volunteer Bat Wardens decided to break the link with the District Council and form an independent group, with a formal constitution and committee affiliated to the Bat Conservation Trust.
