An Exposé of
the Courtship & Betrothal Movements
The teaching of 'courtship',
and more recently 'betrothal', has become quite a phenomenon in the American
home schooling community. So popular are such ideas becoming that the New York
Times recently did a front page article on this movement. There are a myriad of books and websites
devoted to such ideas, while teachers such as Bill Gothard and Jonathan Lindvall are attracting large audiences with their
authoritarian teachings.
As
I have researched this teaching over the past four years, and spoken with people
who have practiced it, I have become increasingly concerned. Churches are
literally splitting over the issue, families are being divided and broken
through it, and individual lives are being ruined by this unscriptural
ideology.
On this website I have
presented some scholarly essays that explain exactly what this teaching is and
why I believe it to be unbiblical and destructive.
