Sitges and Barcelona
In October 2002 I travelled to
Sitges and Barcelona, in the Cataluyna region of North-East Spain.
I travelled with
Respect Holidays to the
Respect Tara Apartments. The apartments are about a 10/12 minute walk from
the centre of Sitges, and about 8 minutes from the gay beach. The
accommodation was fairly basic and lacked a focal point - there were no
sunbeds or bar, which meant that no one really used the pool area. Also,
there were large dividers between the terraces for each apartment, making
communication with neighbours difficult.
My apartment was on the
ground-floor, which I would not recommend - if you're considering
staying there, and want to avoid ground floor apartments do not chose
Manolo, Javier, Isabel, Teresa or Rosario. The last three are also opposite
the front door which can mean a lot of noise from people arriving home late
from the bars.
Sitges is a small town, about 25
miles South of Barcelona and
is popular with residents of Barcelona escaping the city for the weekend. It
has a number of gay bars and a gay beach. October saw it quieter, as it was
towards the end of the season - having said this, I am sure that the town
must be very frustrating in the peak season given the narrowness of the
streets in the main pedestrianised area.
The railway station is on the
main road which edges around the town. From there, trains regularly stop for
the city of Barcelona. The fare is under 3 euros return, and the journey
takes approximately 25 minutes.
