Zurich, Switzerland

In September 2007, Sebastian and I flew to Zurich for a weekend - my first visit to Switzerland.

We stayed near the airport at the Novotel. This proved an ideal base as there was a free shuttle from the airport, and there was a tram stop into the centre of town only a five minute walk away. The tram took around 25 minutes to reach Lake Zurich, and ran exactly on time. The only downside was that the hotel was being refurbished, and that the whole of the surrounding area seemed to be a building site, as they were extending the tram lines to the airport, and building a business park opposite.

Still, Zurich city centre proved to be quite beautiful with plenty of Alpine architecture, bordering Lake Zurich. The weather was perfect and the views from the top of Grossmunster church tower well worth the long climb.

Mornings were spent sightseeing - visiting the various churches, and viewing the city's architecture - with afternoons relaxing in the park bordering the lake.

Santiago Calatrava had designed the roof of the University Law Library which I had hoped to visit, but unfortunately from the ground I couldn't find it. Still, maybe next time, I'll find it.

Zurich proved to be a very relaxing choice for a weekend away from London - and the air was so clear and pure, it must have done us the world of good too.
