THE BULL HOTEL

|
With its magnificent carved doorway the Cock Hotel is
one of the largest buildings in the High Street. During the coaching era it must have been one of the best- known hostelries in the country. Along with the Bull Hotel which is only a short distance away it is here that the oft used saying "a cock and bull story" is supposed to be derived from the many travellers tales which circulated between the two inns, many, no doubt, influenced by the effects of alcohol. The nursery rhyme "Ride a Cock horse to Banbury Cross"also has its origins from the many animals once stabled here. |
