In the heart of the town the market
square has a number of interesting
buildings. It also contains the sadly
depleted but still surviving remains
of the "Wesley tree" so named
after a visit to the town by the
famous methodist preacher John
Wesley who gave a sermon from
under its boughs. The market
square and some of its buildings
were also used as settings in the
feature film "Withnail and I".
Adjacent to the square are the
town's library and health centre.

This imposing building
dominates the northern side
of the market square. Dating
from 1865 it was originally
the town's Police Station and
Courthouse.
