This year we see the return of two of our most popular soloists, mark Hans Christian Lumbye’s bicentennial and welcome a new conductor in Cheltenham and Epsom. Our stunning soprano, Juliette Pochin, has had a busy 2009, appearing regularly with the London Gala Orchesta and working on her second album, The Domestic Diva, due to be released this year. As a result of many requests we are delighted that Juraj Helmanovsky has agreed to enchant us all again with his virtuosic cimbalom playing. Born in 1810 and nicknamed the Strauss of the North, Hans Christian Lumbye led Norway’s passion for popular music in the 19th century, performing music from Vienna as well as writing his own polkas, marches and waltzes. Always part of our New Year celebrations, Lumbye’s exciting music will be one of the many highlights in the 2010 concert. This year we welcome Gavin Sutherland to conduct the concerts in Cheltenham and Epsom. Gavin, who lives in Cheltenham, has recently been appointed musical director of the English National Ballet. Steve Bell will be conducting the other concerts. Steve was invited again in September to conduct the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms from Manchester.
