CHOIR’S LOTTERY SUCCESS
A Lincoln-based choir has won a prestigious £5,000 award from the National Lottery. The Lincoln Orpheus Male Voice Choir has been awarded the money to expand the choir’s musical repertoire and broaden its appeal to the increasingly diverse mix of cultures in Lincolnshire today.
“The guys are absolutely delighted to receive this award”, says a beaming Alan Humphries, the choir’s chairman: “the money will make a huge difference to the choir, and to our ability to give today’s audiences the sort of music they want to hear.
“Many people associate male voice choirs with hymn-singing Welsh miners, but a lot has changed over the past few decades”, says Alan. “The focus these days is much more on entertainment and music from a wide variety of styles and cultures. We still sing some of the old tunes of course, but nowadays you will hear all sorts of songs, from folksongs to opera, showtunes to Abba, even Tom Jones to Robbie Williams!
“Keeping the repertoire fresh and relevant to today’s society, especially for our younger members and audiences, can be expensive”, explains Alan. “So this money will really help the choir to continue serving Lincolnshire’s entire community in the future”.
The Lincoln Orpheus, the city’s premier all-male amateur choir, numbers about 23 adult singers and is led by a professional musical director. The choir gives concerts throughout Lincolnshire and meets for rehearsals every Tuesday night in uphill Lincoln. The choir is currently on the look-out for new singing talent, and offers full training and free voice coaching to new members. Interested? Ring 01529 410072 for details.
