The Littlefairs

The Littlefairs were and still are a Northern Family. Their earliest roots are found in the old County of Durham.
It was the main growth area. Lesser and later roots are found in Lincoln, Nottingham, Leicester and in Yorkshire, at Wensley near Leyburn. Durham Littlefairs spread to Northumberland. Wensley Littlefairs were the other growth group. They
spread to Lancashire

The Picture

My father was christened Littlefair. That is him in the middle with his mother and step father. He is the reason for my interest in Littlefairs and I dedicate this site to his memory.

Durham and Northumberland Littlefairs

Our earliest record of Littlefairs is at Wolviston, near Billingham in the 1300's. Late 1500's they were resident in Durham City and with a presence at Bishopwearmouth In the 1600's there are records at Chester le Street, Gateshead and Newcastle and traces at other places in the region.. Late in that Century the families seemed to die out. The plague? Who knows?

The exception was in the parish of Cockfield where they survived and where in the 1700's they were thriving. In the 1800's they were again on the move, spreading to all parts of Durham County and into Northumberland.
