Miscellanous References to Littlefairs Worldwide from 1316

1100-1500 SURNAMES were beginning to develop in the period some derived from places and manors and others from occupations or nicknames or from the names of fathers or ancestors. The Court rolls of manors held by Durham priory have many examples of interesting names some of which may have died out and others which have developed into surnames. The name Littlefair fits in well with other similar names like Simdoughter, Litilanotson, Haddock, Hardlad, Robinsdoughter, Raynaldson and Robinsdoughter mentioned in these documents.

1316 UNKNOWN LOCATION This is the earliest reference to Littlefair that I have found so far, but I have not got any real details. A publication called "Contracts in the Local Courts of Medieval England" By Robert Llewellyn Henry published 1926 mentions a case of 1316 "Littlefair v Clairvaux" and states that this is listed in "Select Cases Concerning the Law Merchant i" Published by the Selden Society vol xxiii page 99 I suspect this is connected with the powerful Clervaux family who were based at Croft on Tees from the 1200s to 1500s. I have found references to many records of the Clervaux family including a note that Henry le Scrope and William De Clervaux were returned as joint lords of Croft Walmire and Jolby in 1316. I have not been able to find a copy of the Selden Society publication on the internet.

1360 COUNTY DURHAM Littlefairs (under various spellings) occur in the Court rolls of manors held by Durham Cathedral priory (1296-1384). These documents have been published in Volume 82 of the Surtees Society records. Durham cathedral priory held many manors in the county of Durham. They were administered by halmotes, or manor courts before officials from the monastery. Court rolls in these courts survive from 1296, 1300, 1309, and from 1333, but with years missing but are mostly continuous from 1365 onwards. Manors under the jurisdiction of Durham Priory were Aycliffe, Bellasis, (Newton) Bewley, Billingham, Burdun, Chilton, Coupon, Dalton, Edmondbyers, Ferry (Hill, or Ferrycliffe), Fulwell, Harton, Hebburn, Hedworth, Hesledon, Heworth, Jarrow, Kirk Merrington, East Merrington, West Merrington and Mid Merrington, Monkton, Moorsley, Newton Ketton, Nunstanton, North and South Pittington, East and West Rainton, Ravensflat, Shields, Southwick, Spen, Usworth, Wallsend, Wardley, Wearmouth, Westoe, Willington and WOLVISTON. The earliest records I have found of any Littlefair that include details of location concern Littlefairs residing in the manor of Wolviston. Wolviston is an attractive village now popular with commuters that was part of the ancient parish of Billingham in medieval times. Billingham church (dating back to Saxon times) can still be seen near Billingham village. Wolviston's church only dates to 1876 but replaced an earlier church near the centre of the village. It was dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen. The register of this church dates from 1577, but Wolviston church seems to have been a parochial chapel of Billingham.

1366 WOLVISTON The earliest record of the Littlefair name I have found with details of a location occurs in the Court rolls of manors held by Durham priory (1296-1384). The entry reads as follows (I may have included the previous entry as well): "Injunctum est Fayr-Jon quod veniet et moretur cum familia sua super terram Domini citra prox. curiam sub poena admision is (SIC) praedictae terrae." "injunctum est Thomae filio Willelmi ad reparandum unam grangium; Willelmo Lititlfaire, ad reparandum dum donum; ...." The first entry seems to refer to repairs undertaken following a hailstorm (grangium) and the second part to the repair of an abode or house of some kind. I am not clear whether the Thomae filio Willelmi (Thomas son of William) is the son of the Willelmo LITILFAIRE referred to in the second part of the entry.

1368 WOLVISTON Another early record of Littlefair occurs in 1368. It again occurs under the entry for Wolviston in the Court rolls of manors held by Durham priory (1296-1384). It reads as follows: "De Willelmo Litilfayr quia non invenit unam mulierum metentem cum Domino tempore autumplani pro j cotagio quod cepit de Domino prout convenit inter ipsum et terrarium, viz. Johannem de Neuton, de misericordia 12d. : condonatus 6d per terrarium."

1368 WOLVISTON (Tasters) The next early record of the Littlefair name that I have found occurs in 1368. It again occurs under the entry for Wolviston in the Court rolls of manors held by Durham priory (1296-1384). The entry reads as follows: "Willelmus de Stokton et Willelmus Litilfayr electi sunt tastores cervisae et jurati sunt." This seems to roughly translate that a William of Stockton and William LITILFAYR have been elected as tasters (tastores cervisae) and assesors presumably for the manor of Wolviston. According to my research a Tastores Cervisae were the ale tasters (ale conners) of a parish. They ensured that the local ale was up to standard.

1378 WOLVISTON The next early record of a Littlefair occurs in 1378. Once again it occurs under the entry for Wolviston in the Court rolls of manors held by Durham priory (1296-1384). I may have copied more than one entry here but it reads as follows: "Cecilia quae fuit uxor Willelmi Litilfair cepit unum cotagium et ij acras terrae quae fuerunt in tenura pd.

1381 STAFFORDSHIRE? The classic work on English Surnames is "A Dictionary of English Surnames by PH Reaney and RM Wilson. This attempts to find the earliest records of known surnames and explain the meanings of those names. The book suggests that the name means "Little companion" incorporating the medieval word "Fere" or "Fair" meaning "companion". This is plausible but the earliest cited incidence of the surname in the dictionary is "Lutfair" which appears in the Subsidy Rolls of Staffordshire in 1381. Clearly there at least five records that predate this and their spellings are much closer. I do not necessarily accept that Lutfair is an early form of Littlefair and there seems to be no other Staffordshire link. Incidentally Patronymica Britannica By Mark Antony Lower, a dictionary of the family names of the United Kingdom published in 1860 claims that the name Littlefair derives from "Littlefear" meaning "a man of courage".

1396-7 WOLVISTON CO.DURHAM Durham Cathedral Priory Rentals (Published by Surtees Society) lists a Littlefair (Litilfair, Litilfare) Cecilia, 108/37; W., 151/12> I have searched this document in Darlington library it is published as Volume 198 of the Surtees Society records. Cecilia Litilfair is listed in the "Rental Bursarii Dunemensis 1396-7" and she lived in Wolviston where she was the ward of Willielmi Stere - "Estraw De Wolueston" "De Cecilia Litilfair pro warda Willelmi Stere ad terminum iij s. ix d." The other Littlefair listed is a W Litilfare listed under Dalton (near Seaham) "De W. Litilfare per annum xlj s. vjd Unde sol' in j bove x s. vjd. Item sol' in ij quarteriis frumenti viij s. Item in iii j quarteriis ordei xij s. Item in iiij quarteriis ordei xij s. Item in iiij quarteriis avene v s. Sic debet vj s. sol vj s."

1578 CO.DURHAM The Injunctions and Other Ecclesiastical Proceedings of Richard Barnes (Bp of Durham) 1577-1587 lists THOMAS LITTLEFAIR as the parish clerk of Kelloe 1578. Can't find any other likely references to him in IGI.

1580 CO.DURHAM The Injunctions and Other Ecclesiastical Proceedings of Richard Barnes (Bp of Durham) 1577-1587 lists King's Scholars at Durham Cathedral including a JOHN LITTLEFAIR in 1580. Only possible reference to him in IGI is Christening Durham ST Nicholas 1558 that would make him 22 at time of scholarship.

1603 - 1604 NOTTINGHAM William Littlefare and William Hyde are Sheriffs of Nottingham. Perhaps same Nottingham Wm Littlefare in IGI born about 1564, married 1589.

1624 - 1604 NOTTINGHAM William Littlefare Junior and Thomas Cook are Sheriffs of Nottingham. Presumably the son of the Sheriff of 1603/4

1627 AMERICA AND COUNTY DURHAM This is the earliest record I have found so far of a Littlefair in America: The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography By Virginia Historical Society published in the 1890s has the following fascinating record from a court at "James Citty 6th Ffebruary 1627": Only limited snippets of this record are available from the Google Books search facility. "Richard LITTLEFERE aged 30 yeares & borne in the Bishoprick of Durrham sworne and examined sayth that about 2 of the clocke in the night on the 14th day of January last past hee this examinate lyeing in his bed heard one walk about..." (...extract missing from Google books.....) ".....Edward Grinden gent sworne and examined sayth that on Sonday night the 14th day of January last past this deponent's wife told him that Richard Littlefere his servant did last night see the Will'm Mills one other of his servants Comeing...." Note the record is LITTLEFERE (One e). Perhaps this is the RYCHARD LITTLEPHARE christened 16 JUL Saint Giles 1620, though this puts him short of the 30 years claimed iin this case. He is more likely the RICHARD LITTLEPHARE listed as a Christening in the IGI 22 OCT Saint Nicholas, Durham 1598. This would make him 29 at the time of the court case.

1632 YORKSHIRE Think this is the correct year. A John Littlefayre and Margaret were maried. This occurs in the publications of the Yorkshire Archaeological Society Parish Register Section. Can't find this in the IGI.

1641 CO.DURHAM Durham Protestations: Or, The Returns Made to the House of Commons in 1641/2 (Returns made to the house of commons in 1641/2 for the maintenance of the Protestant religion for the county Palatine of Durham for the borough of Berwick-upon-Tweed and the parish of Morpeth) lists a Jn, Ralph, Richard, Robt and Thos Littelfaire This is published as Volume 135 of the Surtees Society records sheets of names (signatories) were gathered from each parish. There must be hundreds upon hundreds of names in this volume from throughout Durham. The following Littlefairs are listed. Under STRANTON (Hartlepool) JOHN LITTLEPHAIRE, ROBERT LITTLEPHARE, THOMAS LITTLEPHARE. At ST GILES (DURHAM) a RICHARD LITTLEFARE is listed ( a footnote says that Felton has been crossed out and that Littlefare was substituted on the manuscript.) CONSTABULARY OF HARRATON (Lambton Park/Fatfield area alongside the river Wear) In the 1640s this became the most important mining area in the North East. A ROBERT LITTLEFARE is listed here. AT GATESHEAD a THOMAS LITTLEFAIRE is listed. In KELLOE TOWN a RALPH LITTLFARE is listed. At BISHOP WEARMOUTH an EDWARD LITTLEFORTH is listed. FINDING THESE LITTLEFAIRS ON THE IGI ?: Are the three Littlephaires at Stranton the same as the Littlephaires (same spelling) Robert, John and Thomas Littlephaires christened at St Nicholas Durham City in 1604, 1615 and 1619? RICHARD LITTLEFARE of St Giles may occur elsewhere in the IGI. The only Richards on the IGI from this period are all from St Nicholas Church in Durham City (the neighbouring parish to St giles in Durham City). Possible candidates are Richard Littlefare (christened 1571), Richard Littlefaire (married 1585), Richard Littlephare (christened 1598), Richard Littlefaire (married 1602), Richard Littlephare (christened 1610), Richard Littlephare (married 1614), Richard Littlephaier (married 1632). There was a Margaret Littlefair married at Stranton in 1631. Later records connected with the Hartlepool area include a George Littlefair married at Greatham and a John Littlefair christened at greatham in 1685. A Susanna Littlefaire is married at Stranton in 1723. I have not found any Roberts from the Harraton/Washington area in this period, though there was a Robert Christened in Gateshead in 1634 and a Robert christened in Bishopwearmouth 1657 who may be from the same family.Harraton lies between Bishopwearmouth and Gateshead but I think it would have been in the parish oc Chester-le-Street. The only possible match for Ralph Littlefare of Town Kelloe in the IGI would be the christening of Ralph Littlefair at St Margaret's Durham City in 1584 (57 years earlier). A Ralph Littlefair is christened at Gateshead in 1650 but this is obviously too late. Edward Littleforth of Bishopwearmouth could be the same as the Edward Littlefur married at Bishopwearmouth in 1645.

1791-1797 LONDON AT LEAST ONE LITTLEFEAR in Members of London livery companies (1791-1797) One of the most useful sections of the Universal British Directory, nominally produced in 1791 but including later material, is a List of the Livery of London, giving the names and addresses of members of the London livery companies, together with their professions. As a glance at the sample will show, the companies and the professions only sometimes match, so this is an invaluable key as a first step in tracing the relevant company records for a London trader of this period

1808 CO.DURHAM Mark Howarth Littlefair born 1808 has a biog in the 1889 Monthly Chronicle of North Country Lore and Legend which I have a copy of at home. He was a key member of the temperance movement well known in Sunderland and was a glass blower/ bottle maker by trade. His father,a soldier in the barracks at Woolwich was called Richard Howarth. Richard had married Hannah Littlefair at Bishopwearmouth, 1805. They had christened their son at the Sunderland CornMill chapel in 1808 as Mark Littlefair Howarth. He for some reason had decided to use his mother's maiden name. I suggest the Mark Howarth Littlefair in the colliery incident of 1912 is related

1835-1836 NATIONAL AT LEAST ONE LITTLEFAIR MENTIONED in "British merchant seamen" (1835-1836) At this period, the foreign trade of ships plying to and from the British isles involved about 150,000 men on 15,000 ships; and the coasting trade about a quarter as many more. A large proportion of the seamen on these ships were British subjects, and so liable to be pressed for service in the Royal Navy; but there was no general register by which to identify them, so in 1835 parliament passed a Merchant Seamen's Registration Bill. The register records the number assigned to each man; his name; age; birthplace; quality (master, captain, mate, 2nd mate, mariner, seaman, fisherman, cook, carpenter, boy &c.); and the name and home port of his ship, with the date of the crew list (usually at the end of a voyage).
