Religious buildings - conformism and non-conformism.

A visitor in 1808 described St. Peter's as a handsome, cruciform medieval church with rood screen and carved stalls. Perhaps of what he saw, only the base of the tower and the font within it remain. Although the belfry date is uncertain, much of the present structure dates from an 1827 rebuild. More inside work was done in 1894.

The first Graig Congregational Chapel was built in 1789 and Titus Evans, one of its members, set up Machynlleth's first printing press in that year. The building soon proved not big enough, and the present one is from 1824.

Most of the district's villages each had their own church, and sometimes several chapels of rival denominations.
