ENCLOSURE OF LAND
Parliament passed a large number of Enclosure Acts between 1750 and 1860. Their objective was to bring together common land and strip farming which had been practiced for many hundreds of years. The result was the field system which we see today and is still visible in the English Countryside. The Acts did not include all land, Beverley Westwood is common land and strip farming is still practiced in the Isle of Axholme in Lincolshire. |
