What is the Loco Detailing Service?
Put simply I take run of the mill locos and items of rolling stock produced by the likes of Hornby and Bachmann and customise them to make them look more like the real thing. The extent of this work depends on what the customer wants and the level of detail on the out-of-the-box model.
I specialise in OO guage, 4mm scale models and particularly steam locomotives from the Southern Region of British Rail. Bulleid's 'spam cans' are a particular favourite. My work does extend beyond this period/region and has even included diesels and DMUs!
What services do I provide?
The list below should give some indication of the range of services i provide:

- Renumbering: Removal of existing numbers and/or company crests and the application of different ones.
- Renaming: Fitting new name plates using the etched brass products from the likes of Fox, Model Master, 247 Developments and Shaw Plan.
- Basic Detailing: Fitting the detailing packs now supplied by manufactures with many new models.
- Additional Detailing: Addition of scale lamps / route disks, buffer beam pipes, steps not in the manufacturers pack, screw coupling, loco crew and real coal in the tender.
- Enhanced Detailing: Researching the condition of a particular loco at a particular period of time and altering the model to suit. This can include obtaining the correct tender, fitting the correct boiler fittings and replacing 'toy features' with scale alternatives.
- Conversion: Amending a model of one prototype to another through surgery.
- Weathering: Distressing the appearance of a pristine model to reflect the grimey, dirty appearance of a locomotive in service.
What I don't do is build loco kits or dabble with DCC!
My Experience
I'm a keen railway modeller and have been a member of Stafford Railway Circle since the early 1980's. I undertook the scenic design and much of the research on the club's EM gauge layout New Haden. This was featured in the February 2004 edition of Model Rail. Along with two other members of the SRC, I've built and now exhibit a BR(S) layout called Treneglos based upon the Withered Arm line to Padstow. We've exhibited at Bakewell, Basingstoke, Macclesfield, Uckfield, Wadebridge, Warley, Warrington, Wigan, York and, of course, once or twice at Stafford. Treneglos was reviewed in April 2005 by Trains on-line and is one of their showstoppers. At a number of these shows I've demonstrated some of the techniques used to detail and weather locos.
Additional to loco detailing I have a lengthy experince in designing and undertaking scenic work on exhibition layouts. This extends from the 'green stuff' through to buildings and on to bridges / engineering features. I'm a member of the Southern Email Group and am listed on the superb UK Model Shop Directory. By trade I'm a Chartered Civil Engineer working for one of the largest European consultancy firms.
