roller skiers at Lancaster course by Alistair Brown

Club Coaches

The Club has a (growing) number of qualified instructors and coaches covering alpine, telemark and cross country disciplines who are able to help members develop their skills and expertise at all levels.

Roller Ski Coaching Programme

Starting in late autumn, and continuing through the winter, fortnightly Saturday morning coaching sessions are provided at the Manchester Cyclesway in Chorlton, South Manchester. Each session is approximately 2 hours long and refreshments are provided, though you might like to bring your own extra water, chocolate or energy bars etc. You can attend as many or as few of these sessions as you like.

The sessions cater for skiers of all levels, including aspirant racers, and beginners with no previous experience will be particularly welcome. For a small fee all the necessary equipment can be provided for those who need it: just let us know your requirements when you contact us about attendance.

The aim of the coaching programme is to be as flexible as possible and to cater for the needs of those who attend. The early sessions concentrate on skills work and, depending upon the wishes of those who attend and the progress made, later sessions may be spent exploring the track with coaching tips provided on the move.

Ideally by the end of the programme, all beginners would be of a level able to take part in the rollertouring programme run over the spring and summer (see Events page for details) or for a cross-country holiday on snow. Those with some previous experience should be ready for anything, loppet racing, touring on snow or tarmac.

Even those who don't want any actual coaching are very welcome to join us on the coaching dates for a run-out along the track. There are normally other club members doing just that who can show you the way.

Roller Ski Tours

During the spring and summer we run a roller ski touring programme (see Events page for details).

Although not recommended as an introduction for complete beginners they are suitable for relatively novice rollerskiers who have attended the club’s coaching sessions at Chorlton or the SSE Nordic courses, or the experienced skier who enjoys keeping fit on rollers outside the on-snow season. As well as allowing you to put into practice what you’ve learnt, coaching tips on the move can be provided.

On-Snow Downhill Skills/Telemarking Courses

The Club organises Downhill Skills/Telemarking Courses for club members of all abilities - beginners to advanced - to revitalise our minds and muscles for the coming ski season.

Since the new indoor snow slope Chill Factore opened at the Trafford Centre in November 2007, the Club has arranged two evening courses: the first in late autumn and the second in August 2008. New telemarking skis and boots are available for hire inclusive of entry cost.

For details of future courses please see the Events page.

On Snow Club Meets/Coaching

Club Meets take place at Chill Factore during the Saturday 8-9.30am slot exclusive to clubs.
These occur every 2 weeks (see Events page for dates) and cost £17.40 for 1½ hours

Tourers and telemarkers can practice downhill drills on the main slope. Cross-country skiers also have the opportunity to use the nursery slope for 'non grip-wax' training and fitness exercises (members need to provide their own skis and boots).

Club coaches usually attend and are available for informal coaching and support.

Individual Coaching

Members are encouraged to contact the club coaches to arrange coaching sessions outside the organised meets.
