Introduction

The AGM of the Twinning Association was held in the Town Hall on May 23 with 31 members present. The meeting was honoured by the presence of the newly elected Mayor, Cllr Joe Tormey. After a short business meeting (minutes have been sent to all members) there was a social evening with tea and biscuits followed by an illustrated presentation by David Walker on the history and great contemporary value of twinning.

Gembloux

We visited our Belgian twin town of Gembloux from May 26 to 30

The two organisers, Phill Symonds and Fernand Masson, were soon into the spirit of Twinning! Fernand was only posing with Daniel who had cooked a super barbeque. Fernand was an entertaining host, but Janine and other ladies did most of the work in the kitchen.

We met Benoit Dispa, the new Mayor. We had a very interesting day in and around Waterloo with one of our hosts, Ivan Schoonooghe, who was a real enthusiast for, and expert on, Napoleon, and he dressed the part. Finally we had a day in Namur, (which is to Gembloux as Leicester is to Loughborough) a really beautiful and interesting town at the confluence of the Meuse and Sambre rivers, finishing with a boat trip. We had a great time, renewed friendships, and came to know Belgium and Gembloux a little better. It is a great place and a great group of people.

Epinal

Don't forget: the party for the Group which is on Saturday July 14th, the visit to Epinal for the Braderie around September 9th, and the visit for the feast of St Nicolas in early December. French politics have been very interesting recently and we have been thinking of Michel Heinrich who is the MP for Epinal (and the Mayor)

Zamosc
The next visit to Zamosc (August 16 to 25) is now planned in detail. For half the group it will be a first time visit, the others will be looking forward to renewing old friendships. The excursion to Slovakia and the Tatra Mountains National Park will be a new experience for all of us.
