A ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD was seen at Haddiscoe and later between Fritton and Somerleyton on the 26th. A PEREGRINE continues to be seen regularly at Peto's Marsh and a MERLIN was there as well on the 27th.

The stunning BLACK-THROATED DIVER remains on Oulton Broad, although it does range widely over the Broad. It was at the west end on the 22nd to 27th. COMMON BUZZARDS were noted at Mutford and Burgh Castle where a GREENSHANK was present on the 20th. At Kessingland a female GOOSANDER passed south on the 21st.

BLACK-THROATED DIVER Gavia arctica ****

One was discovered on Oulton Broad on the 13th. Initially at the western end but by late afternoon it was ranging between The Boulevard and Caldecott Road at the eastern end. Much of the Broad froze overnight, so on the 14th it had moved salt side to Lake Lothing; but by the afternoon it had moved back to The Boulevard area at the eastern end of the Broad.

Once again present from the 13th-22nd showing extremely well on Oulton Broad. On the 22nd to 27th it was seen at the far western end of the Broad towards Boathouse Lane and Oulton Dyke/Fisher Row.

GREAT WHITE EGRET Egretta alba
As hoped, the bird that was seen on January 30th flying along the River Waveney towards Aldeby was relocated on Castle Marshes, North Cove on the 3rd, and was still present most of the day on the 4th, though not always on view. After a day of non cooperation on the 5th it was back again on the 6th, 7th and 8th.

What was almost certainly a Great White Egret was seen from the train on Somerleyton Marshes on the 16th around 09:00.

Seen again on the 21st in flight along the Norfolk side of the River Waveney south-west of Waveney River Centre at 14:00.

MUTE SWAN Cygnus olor ****
90 were on the Marshes between Barnby and North Cove on the 5th.
Two kept a BLACK SWAN company on the 21st at Gillingham Marsh.
A young bird has taken up residence on one of the ponds alongside Tom Crisp Way in central Lowestoft since the 23rd.



BEWICK'S SWAN Cygnus (columbianus) bewickii
30+ flew north over Gunton at 09:33 on the 17th presumably heading back to the continent.
80 flew east over Lowestoft Harbour at 09:15 on the 20th, the same morning 90 flew out to sea at Southwold.
37 were on Breydon Water on the 20th.
One was on Shipmeadow Marshes, Beccles on the 19th.

RED KITE Milvus milvus ****
On the 8th one flew north over Mutford at 10:08 and was then seen over Barnby Broad and Castle Marshes, North Cove before it drifted off westwards along the Waveney Valley at 10:25.

One flew along the River Waveney, viewed from Carlton Marshes at 13:35 on the 21st.

Two were seen north of Breydon near Berney Marshes RSPB on the 26th.



COMMON BUZZARD Buteo buteo
One flew north at Mutford on the 6th.
One was seen at Castle Marshes, North Cove on the 8th.
A Buzzard sp flew south-west over Rotterdam Road, Lowestoft at 8:20 on the 8th.
Two flew over Ash Farm at Mutford on the 12th and 13th with one noted on the 15th.
Two were over Burgh Castle on the 21st.
One was at Mutford Big Wood on the 22nd.
Two were at Ashby on the 28th.



ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD Buteo lagopus ****
One found on Haddiscoe Island on the 26th later that day flew across the River Waveney into Lizard Land airspace across Fritton Marshes. A squadron of Crows on quick reaction alert rapidly intercepted it but were unable to turn it back and it continued on through St.Olaves, past Herringfleet and almost to Somerleyton Marshes before it crossed the river back into Norfolk and headed for Haddiscoe Marshes.

178 were at Peto's Marsh, Carlton Marshes on the 27th. The increase in numbers has been rapid in the last couple of weeks as they return to their breeding haunts.



ICELAND GULL Larus glaucoides
On the 5th the first winter bird was just across the river from North Cove on the marshes at Long Dam Level, Aldeby, Norfolk. It was also seen at Aldeby Tip itself on the 10th. On the 11th it was at Leathes Ham from 11:00 to 11:40 when it flew off south.

25 were trapped for ringing on Kessingland Beach on the 7th, a surprising number for the location. One proved to have been ringed nearby at the sewage works in April 2006.

One ringed at Kessingland on 20th November 2004 was retrapped at Caister-on-Sea, Norfolk on 18th February this year. Still only half way to the European longevity record of 9 years 6 month.

A total of 58 have been colour ringed at Kessingland this winter.
