Black Redstart - Lowestoft North Denes - March 2009 - Andrew Easton.

As always a big thanks to all those who contribute to these pages.

On the 26th an eagle was seen flying north, being mobbed by Buzzards, at Mutford, and later the same day it was also seen over the Waveney Forest. The initial observer is confident from previous experience abroad that it was an Aquila species but the views were not sufficient to be 100% certain of the specific identity.

A GREAT WHITE EGRET was seen in flight over Burgh Castle on the 26th, and the first COMMON SWIFT of the year had arrived over Oulton the same day.

A male MONTAGU'S HARRIER at Lound waterworks and Browston on the 25th was a nice surprise. Other raptors seen the same day included a ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD between Weston and Hulver and a RED KITE and two HOBBIES at Mutford.

Early morning visits to Leathes Ham paid off on the 24th when the local Blackbirds revealed the whereabouts of a LONG-EARED OWL. This beautiful bird remained all day.

Other notable migrants on the 24th included: RING OUZELS at Gapton Marsh and Beacon Park, Gorleston; three LITTLE GULLS at Breydon; and a BLACK REDSTART at Beacon Park.

HOOPOE Upupa epops
The bird from 31st March was reported again early morning on the 1st in the field to the south of the old sewage works, but was not seen subsequently.

A typically short stay by a spring migrant in a hurry to get to the breeding grounds; autumn birds are generally easier to catch up with as they tend to hang around longer on their more leisurely return to their wintering grounds.

One was seen and heard along Warren Lane, Hopton by the Gorleston golf course at 17:50 on the 5th, but was not relocated on the 6th.

These were the first sightings in the Lowestoft area since 2002, when one was seen at Pakefield in April and another was around the Gunton Drive/Corton Road area in September.

In the spring of 1859 a total of 22 Hoopoes were recorded in Suffolk, with thirteen of them being shot in Lowestoft alone. (Piotrowski, S.H. 2003. The Birds of Suffolk. Christopher Helm, London). So there's a long way to go to break that record.
