The local House Sparrows seem to be doing well this year, with plenty of newly fledged youngsters being brought to the bird table.

A NUTHATCH was at Mutford Big Wood on the 27th.
A CORY'S SHEARWATER flew south past Kessingland on the morning of the 25th.
Two CRANES flew over St. Olaves on the evening of the 24th.
Three MANX SHEARWATERS flew past Ness Point on the 18th, with another past there on the 19th; and three BLACK TERNS flew south past Kessingland on the 19th.

One just missed our area on the 5th and was watched from Burgh Castle flying westward towards Reedham high over The Island. ]
KESTREL Falco tinnunculus
One took cover in a nest box at Kessingland sewage works when the rain started on the 27th.
When inspected previously the same box has contained Kestrel feathers and pellets from Little and Barn Owls, so it seems to be serving as a convenient shelter for several birds if they get caught out by the weather rather than a nest site.

A dark phase individual was watched chasing terns as it flew north past Ness Point on the 12th.

A different pale phase immature was also seen on the 18th off Kessingland.
Three flew north past Ness Point on the afternoon of the 19th.

The ringed bird at Ness Point was green 3XA9, a Belgian ringed bird that has been regularly visiting Lowestoft since 2004. It tends to range between Links Road car park and the harbour.

A juvenile was in the bay at Gorleston on the 3rd.
YELLOW-LEGGED GULL Larus michahellis ****
The regular individual that has been returning since 1997 was on the groynes along Gunton Beach on the 5th (five days earlier than noted last summer).
It is at least 17 years old now as it was a full adult, at least four years old, when first noted 13 years ago!
It was seen flying north over the Denes Oval on the 12th, and was along the North Beach on the 14th, 18th, 19th, 29th and 31st. Still looking pretty tatty.
An oversummering individual was bathing in the river at Gorleston on the 6th, and one was lingering offshore there on the 21st.

A white Cockatiel was sharing a chimney stack in Raglan Street, Lowestoft with an adult and juvenile Herring Gull on the 6th. Surprisingly the gulls seemed quite indifferent to its presence. ]

This just out of the nest young Dunnock at Leathes Ham provided definitive proof of breeding for this species in tetrad G in the 10km square TM59 for the BTO Atlas.

Just to the south of our area a pair are around Benacre Hall.
One adult at least was still at Rookery Park golf course on the 6th.
Four were still at Rookery Park golf course on the 16th.

A few pairs are hanging on locally, but hard to find nowadays.NUTHATCH Sitta europaea ****
One was at Mutford Big Wood on the 27th. Maybe the same one seen there last December and January.
A very rare sight in Lizard Land nowadays unfortunately.
SISKIN Carduelis spinus
One male was seen at Waveney Forest on the 12th.
COMMON CROSSBILL Loxia curvirostra ****
One flew over Oulton Broad on the 10th.
Two flew over Ashby on the 11th.
Ten flew west over Caldecott Road, Oulton Broad on the 20th.
Five were feeding in an Oak at Lound waterworks on the 22nd.

Two white stag Fallow Deer (White Harts) were in fields at Ashby at dusk on the 3rd.
A few Small Red-eyed Damselflies were at Lound waterworks on the 4th, along with at least one Norfolk Hawker. Norfolk Hawkers were also seen at Rushmere on the 3rd, and around Mutford on the 4th. Brown and Southern Hawkers were also flying on the 4th and 5th.
White Admiral butterflies were on the wing at Mutford Wood on the 4th and at Lound waterworks on the 5th, and four were seen in Waveney Forest on the 12th. Small Skipper, Brown Argus and Ringlet butterflies were also present in good numbers at Lound waterworks.
Essex Skippers were seen along Breydon South Wall on the 11th. Lots of Small Skippers were around Lowestoft North Denes on the 13th, along with Meadow Browns and Six-spot Burnet moths.
An obliging Hummingbird Hawk-moth was soaking up the sun on the boardwalk near the pond at Corton new sewage works on the 5th, and Small Red-eyed Damselflies were seen at the pond itself.
Several moths, probably Silver Y's were arriving in off the sea at Lowestoft on the morning of the 5th, one of which was grabbed by a Swift just before it reached the coast.
An Elephant Hawk-moth was at the St. Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School playing field on the 10th.
A very tame Water Shrew was showing well at Lound waterworks on the 7th.
A Hummingbird Hawk-moth was in a garden at St. Olaves on the 15th.
A Clouded Yellow butterfly was seen along the South Wall at Breydon on the 22nd, and another was seen alongside the river Waveney at North Cove on the 23rd.
100+ Painted Ladies, 50+ Commas and 20+ Peacock butterflies were noted at Beccles Marshes on the 24th, along with a Scarce Chaser.
