Seawatching season is fast approaching.

As always a big thanks to all those who contribute to these pages.


A JACK SNIPE was at Fritton Marshes on the 30th, and four BRAMBLING were at Fisher Row the same day.

A
YELLOW-BROWED WARBLER was at Kessingland sewage works on the 25th, and at least two different GLOSSY IBIS were seen at Breydon Water on the 25th to 27th.

Single SOOTY and BALEARIC SHEARWATERS were seen at Kessingland on the 24th.

The ORTOLAN remained at Corton up to the 23rd, a GLOSSY IBIS flew out to sea over Kessingland on the 21st , and a YELLOW-BROWED WARBLER was at Hopton the same day.

Yes that little black cross in the lower right corner is indeed a Manx Shearwater, and this is approximately the view you would get through a 10x pair of binoculars. The tanker in the distance, the Torm Helene, is moored a fraction under four miles offshore.

BALEARIC SHEARWATER Puffinus mauretanicus
One flew north past Corton on the 14th.
One flew north past Kessingland at 16:55 on the 24th.



SHEARWATER sp.
A large shearwater flew north distantly past Ness Point on the morning of the 6th. The structure and flight action were indicative of it being a Great Shearwater P. gravis but a closer view to see some plumage features would have been nice.

A Manx or Balearic was seen briefly as it flew north distantly offshore from Lowestoft North beach on the evening of the 13th.

Ness Point - 14th (one arrived in off the sea), 17th (one was heading eastward out to sea).

GLOSSY IBIS Plegadis falcinellus

One flew south-eastward out to sea over Kessingland at 15:00 on the 21st.
One unringed bird was on the Norfolk bank of the estuary at Burgh Castle on the 25th, and what is presumed to be the same bird flew over Breydon Bridge at 17:02 and then gained height and headed ESE out to sea.
One flew along the North Wall marshes at Breydon at 08:00 on the 26th and settled on the Norfolk bank at Burgh Castle again. It was shortly afterwards flushed by a boat and initially flew towards Belton Marshes, crossing into Lizard Land airspace as it did so, but then headed off high north eastwards towards the Caister area.
Also on the 26th one was watched by a resident of Bradwell trying to find a way into his garden pond ! The netting proved itself to be ibis proof and the bird flew off towards Breydon.
One ringed individual was on the Norfolk bank of the estuary at Burgh Castle on the 27th before flying eastwards across the estuary then back north and disappearing below the embankment onto Breydon Water again, but could not then be relocated.

MUTE SWAN Cygnus olor
Five were flying low over Leathes Ham and Lake Lothing early morning on the 25th before heading off north westward. The resident pair at Leathes Ham immediately adopted their aggressive posture when the group appeared from the east.
Ten flew north past Lowestoft North Beach early morning on the 26th.



PINK-FOOTED GOOSE Anser brachyrhynchus

Eight flew north past Corton on the 13th.
On the 27th, just across the border in Norfolk, 150+ were at Berney Marshes RSPB, and the bird with the injured wing seen in August was still present on the bank opposite the Castle.

Two flew north past Ness Point then later Corton on the 14th.

HONEY BUZZARD Pernis apivorus

One pale morph bird thought to be an adult male was watched being mobbed by crows as it drifted westward over Gapton Marshes and along Breydon South Wall at 15:30 on the 5th.
One flew over Corton from the west on the 19th and appeared to fly out to sea.
One went to roost in the woodland south of Corton old sewage works on the evening of the 20th.

Corton disused railtrack - 10th (one over).
Carlton Marshes - 13th (2).



COMMON BUZZARD Buteo buteo

One was seen at Ashby on the 5th.
Five were watched circling together over Mutford on the 6th.
One was seen at Henstead Church on the 6th.
Six were seen just south of our area over Beach Farm, Benacre on the 12th.
One was circling over Lansdowne Road, Pakefield on the afternoon of the 19th.
One was at Beccles Marshes on the 19th.
One was over the Kessingland Levels on the 26th.
Four were circling south together over Whites Lane, Kessingland on the 29th.



OSPREY Pandion haliaetus

One was reportedly at Beccles Marsh Trail lakes at 09:00 on the 5th.



KESTREL Falco tinnunculus

A Norwegian ringed young female was trapped at Kessingland on the 15th. A bit thin as expected after such a long flight, but it was bright and alert and flew off strongly when released. Several were noted arriving in off the sea last autumn as well.
Three were at Lound waterworks on the 18th.



MERLIN Falco columbarius

One arrived in off the sea at Gorleston Pier at 09:50 on the 15th.
One flew south at Gunton Warren on the 18th, pausing on the beach for a short while.

One was at Lound waterworks on the 1st.
One arrived in off the sea at Kessingland on the first.
One was in fields near Radar Lodge, Corton on the 4th.
One was seen at Ashby on the 5th.
One flew south at Bakers' Score, Corton on the 5th.
One flew over Clarkson Road, Oulton on the 6th.
One flew south past Kessingland on the 6th.
One was at Lound waterworks on the 7th.

PEREGRINE Falco peregrinus

One flew north at Burgh Castle on the 27th.



FALCON sp.

A large slim unfamiliar Hobby like falcon, but with longer wings and tail than a Hobby, was patrolling up and down high offshore and south of Ness Point at 07:50 on the 9th before shortly afterwards heading off to the south. Eleonora's Falcon would appear to be the best fit, but unfortunately it's not a species I have seen before.

GREY PARTRIDGE Perdix perdix
Four were in fields alongside Stirrups Lane, Corton on the 19th. Apparently there is an additional covey of 7 to 8 birds frequenting fields to the south of here as well.

At least two were calling in the reeds by the Waveney at Burgh Castle on the 19th.
Two were noisily chasing each other along the edge of the reeds by the Waveney at Burgh Castle on the 27th.
Two were at Fritton Marshes on the 30th.

One flew north with an Arctic Skua past Ness Point on the 17th.

SABINE'S GULL Larus sabini

One adult flew north past Corton on the 13th.
An adult lingered off Gorleston Harbour mouth for three minutes at 09:30 on the 15th, it then headed off northwards.
A juvenile flew north off Ness Point at 08:00 on the 16th.

Our regular Yellow-legged Gull was enjoying a shower and a drink from the cricket pitch sprinklers at the Oval on the 14th.

Large numbers of Swallows, with a few House Martins, Sand Martins and Swifts mixed in were feeding over the Lowestoft North Denes on the 5th, 6th and 7th.
There was a noticeable southbound passage of hirundines throughout our area on the 7th and 8th.
A further southbound passage of over 100 mixed hirundines in half an hour was noted over Oulton on the afternoon of the 21st.

BEARDED TIT Panurus biarmicus
Several were calling in the reeds beside the Waveney at Burgh Castle on the 19th.
15+ were making exploratory flights at Burgh Castle on the 27th and several more were noted at St. Olaves.



COAL TIT
Periparus ater

One was along Corton disused railtrack on the 11th.



TREECREEPER Certhia familiaris

One was at Beccles Marsh Trail lakes on the 5th and 11th.
One was at Arnolds Walk, Lowestoft on the 5th.
One was at Gunton Wood on the 13th.



HOODED x CARRION CROW Corvus cornix x Corvus corone

One was at Corton on the 4th.
One was at the Kessingland Levels on the 26th.



HOUSE SPARROW Passer domesticus

Yet another newly fledged juvenile was feeding at a bird table in Stevens Street, Lowestoft on the 1st. The local sparrows seem to have had a very good breeding season this year, as there has been a steady stream of newly fledged juveniles appearing here regularly throughout the summer.



TREE SPARROW Passer montanus

Three were seen in flight together over Sparrows Nest and the Denes Oval on the morning of the 1st.

One was heard flying north over Lowestoft North Denes on the 28th.

One flew north at Gunton Warren on the 15th.

3+ were at Gunton Wood on the 13th.
Two were at Blocka Lane, Herringfleet on the 13th.

One arrived in off the sea at Hopton on the 13th.

LAPLAND BUNTING Calcarius lapponicus

One was calling in flight over Burgh Castle on the 27th.



ORTOLAN Emberiza hortulana

One was found by the track to the clifftop near Corton old sewage works at around 07:00 on the 20th. It remained in the area until around 11:30 when apparently a photographer flushed it. It was relocated late evening on the coastal path slightly further to the south, nearer to Corton village, where it appeared to be preparing to roost in the stubble. Thanks to Paul Hawkins, who was holidaying locally, for putting the news around the pagers so that so many people could enjoy it.

Still present on the 21st to 23rd, ranging between the sewage works (where it sometimes drinks from a puddle) and along the clifftop to the village. It was reported again on the afternoon of the 26th, apparently being seen on the cliff face below the end of the track.

One was at Lowestoft North Denes on the 19th.
One flew north along the clifftop at Corton on the 19th.
One flew north at Corton disused railtrack on the 19th.

One was at Breydon South Wall on the 26th.
Three were at Burgh Castle on the 27th.
One was at Kessingland sewage works on the 28th.

Lots of Antlion pits were noted near Tramps Alley on the 1st.

Large numbers of Large White butterfly caterpillars and pupae were noted along the seawall along Lowestoft North Beach on the 1st, with a large proportion of them surrounded by cocoons of parasitic wasps that had emerged from their caterpillar victims.

Two Painted Lady butterflies were determinedly heading south at Ness Point very early on the morning of the 2nd.

A Wasp Spider was found near the Net Posts on Lowestoft North Denes on the 3rd.

A Clouded Yellow butterfly was seen at Gorleston Cliffs on the 6th and 19th; one was at Barsham Drain on the 20th; another was at Leathes ham on the 21st, and one was along Breydon South Wall on the 25th.

A Red-eared Terrapin was sunning itself at Leathes Ham on the 14th.

A very young Harvest Mouse, barely the size of a large bumblebee decided to curl up defensively in the middle of a path at Kessingland on the 26th. It was persuaded to climb into a baseball cap to be moved to the brambles at the side of the path to prevent it being trodden on. A nearby Lesser Stag Beetle was nearly as large as the mouse!
