On the 31st one, or two, GREAT SKUAS were noted offshore, a BLACK REDSTART was at Gorleston and four BEWICK'S SWANS flew over central Lowestoft.

An extremely elusive RADDE'S WARBLER was around the Arnold's Walk area on the 29th, and a RICHARD'S PIPIT flew over Gapton and Bradwell Marshes the same day. A BLACK REDSTART was at South Lowestoft Industrial Estate on the 29th.

A
SHORT-EARED OWL was hunting over the North Beach and Denes on the 28th, and one was at Dip Farm on the 30th.

There was a large arrival of REDWINGS and FIELDFARES during the morning of the 27th.

The 26th produced a PALLAS'S and two
YELLOW-BROWED WARBLERS at Hopton, with one YELLOW-BROWED still present on the 27th.

The 3rd saw a constant passage of Gannets, numbers finally started to tail off around 13:00. On the 4th much smaller numbers were passing, but many more were lingering a long way offshore.
On the 10th many were sitting on the sea of Ness Point, and on most days since many Gannets have been feeding beyond the Holm Sand along with good numbers of Cormorants and Red-throated Divers.

GREY HERON Ardea cinerea

One flew north past Ness Point on the 12th.
One flew north at Gunton Warren on the 20th.
Two were at Kessingland sewage works on the 19th.



GLOSSY IBIS Plegadis falcinellus

One flew south along the coast past Hopton on the 4th. It was also seen at Kessingland and later settled at the Town Marshes at Southwold.



BEWICK'S SWAN Cygnus (columbianus) bewickii

A family party of two adults and two young flew south-eastward low over North Quay Retail Park, central Lowestoft, at 16:10 on the 31st.



PINK-FOOTED GOOSE Anser brachyrhynchus

50+ flew over Bradwell, heading towards Berney Marshes, at dusk on the 8th.
75 were seen in flight over the Blundeston Marsh area at 07:45 on the 14th.
150 were seen in flight between Gunton and Oulton on the afternoon of the 15th.
c.1000 flew north at Fritton at 12:50 on the 22nd.



GREYLAG GOOSE Anser anser

20 were feeding in fields at Mutford on the 20th.

c35 flew south over Lake Lothing on the 11th, continuing onwards over Kessingland..
100+ flew over Kessingland sewage works on the 13th.

15 flew westward over the A12 early morning by Lowestoft Lighthouse on the 18th.
Nine flew south at Corton on the 18th.
Two were along Breydon South Wall on the 18th.

HEN HARRIER Circus cyaneus
A first winter bird was hunting over a sugar beet field just south of Heathlands at Kessingland on the 25th. Shortly afterwards it headed out over the beach, circled up high and headed off towards Lowestoft.
An immature male flew south across Breydon Water in Lizard Land on the 31st.

One flew north over Birds Eye and the North Denes on the morning of the 18th before disappearing into the parks.
One was hunting at Barsham Drain on the 25th.

Falco peregrinus

An immature bird was seen along Breydon South Wall on the morning of the 9th.
An immature bird flew south along the cliff at Corton on the 14th.
One flew north over Heathlands Caravan Park, Kessingland on the 30th.

Nine were at Beccles Marshes on the 23rd.

Two were calling at Burgh Castle on the 18th.

One was calling from the spring at Gunton Warren on the 25th, 28th and 31st. Presumably a returning individual set to winter there again.
On was calling beside the Waveney at Barsham Drain on the 25th.

Ness Point - 3rd (36 N - An unexpectedly high total, and easily outnumbering the Arctic Skuas around on the same day), 5th (3 N), 10th (2 N), 12th (1 N), 13th (1 N), 16th (1 N).

Gorleston - 31st (one offshore, then settled on the sea).
An oiled first winter bird was at Lowestoft South Beach on the 5th. Several of the local gulls were mobbing it. It later flew off out to sea.

An adult was around Gorleston Harbour mouth area on the 2nd to 29th, a rather streaky headed individual.
The regular adult was still around the Lowestoft North Beach area up to the 2nd.

One, no doubt also recently arrived from the Continent, was being vigorously mobbed by Jays as it sat in a tree in Warren House Wood on the 10th. It then flew further inland and the Jays seemed to lose interest.
One arrived in off the sea at Gunton Warren on the 15th and continued north westward inland.
One arrived in off the sea at Ness Point on the 16th, then flew south along the coast towards the harbour.
One arrived in off the sea at Kessingland on the 17th and headed south towards Benacre.
One was hunting at Gapton Marshes on the 19th.
One was watched hunting over Lowestoft North Beach and Denes on the 28th.
One was hunting at Dip Farm, Gunton on the 31st, then headed off northward mobbed by crows.

Large numbers of Thrushes, particularly Song Thrushes, were arriving over Lowestoft on the evening of the 9th, they were calling constantly in the drizzle at 23:45. Others had been heard earlier at 22:30 and in between these times. They were still calling overhead before dawn on the 10th, and many more arrived throughout the day on the 10th.

Redwings
and Blackbirds were calling overhead on the evening of the 13th and were still arriving at dawn on the 14th, several Blackbirds dropped in at Kessingland at around 09:00 as well.

Thrushes were arriving in the rain on the evening of the 21st, and daylight revealed newly arrived Yellow-browed Warblers and Firecrests as well.

Large numbers of Redwings and Fieldfares, and some Blackbirds, were arriving along the coast in the drizzle on the morning of the 27th, and there was a constant stream of Redwings over Beccles during the morning as well.

Good numbers of Blackbirds, Redwings and Song Thrushes arrived overnight and early morning around the Lowestoft area on the 31st.

An immature female was around the allotments at Water Lane, Lowestoft on the 10th.
An immature female and an adult male were seen at Kessingland sewage works on the 10th.

RADDE'S WARBLER Phylloscopus schwarzi

An extremely elusive individual was found at Arnold's Walk, south of Lowestoft Lighthouse on the 29th. When it showed, which wasn't often, it did at least show well to those in the right spot.
It seemed to spend most of the time out of view in the inaccessible overgrown garden just to the south of Arnold's Walk.

54 were counted along Breydon South Wall round to Burgh Castle on the 13th.

NUTHATCH Sitta europaea

Just outside our area, two, possibly three, are being heard regularly at the moment around Benacre Hall. Hopefully the woodland there and at nearby Sotterley will continue to hold a reservoir of this species and maybe allow it to spread back to the likes of Gunton and Corton Woods where it used to be a regular sight and sound. Mutford Big Wood has produced the only records so far this year in our area.



TREECREEPER Certhia familiaris

One trapped and ringed at Corton disused railtrack on the 10th appeared to be of the nominate Continental race.
Two were heard calling at Corton Wood on the 11th.
Two were at Beccles Marshes on the 23rd.
One was along the cycle track adjacent to Normanston Cemetery on the 23rd.
One was at Corton new sewage works on the 24th.
One was at Gunton Wood on the 27th.

A flock off 100 arrived in off the sea at Corton on the 14th.
A flock off 20 arrived in off the sea at Gunton Warren on the 14th.

MEALY REDPOLL Carduelis flammea

One was trapped at Kessingland sewage works on the 19th, and found to be bearing a blue plastic ring. The style of the ring strongly suggests it is an escaped cage bird, most likely of Belgian origin. The red poll being a faded yellowy orange colour is also a feature shown by captive birds that haven't been fed a colour supplement in their diet.

LESSER REDPOLL Carduelis cabaret
79 were trapped at Kessingland sewage works on the 19th, two of which had already been ringed elsewhere.
20+ were at Corton disused railtrack on the 23rd.
c.15 were in a garden adjacent to Kirkley Cemetery on the 28th.
One was at Kessingland sewage works on the 31st.



REDPOLL sp. Carduelis cabaret/flammea
(no doubt most of these are Lesser Redpolls)
c20 flew over at Corton on the 10th.
3-5 with Goldfinches at Corton disused railtrack on the 11th.
Four flew over Dip Farm, Gunton on the 14th.
Two were at Corton on the 14th, 15th and 17th.
Four flew north over Gunton Warren on the 18th.
Seven flew south, and eight north, at Corton on the 18th.
20+ flew north over Gunton Warren on the 18th.
Six were at Corton disused railtrack on the 22nd.
Five were at Warren Lane, Hopton on the 22nd.
Five flew south over Dip Farm, Gunton on the 23rd.
c20 flew over Lowestoft North Denes on the 23rd.



CROSSBILL Loxia curvirostra

One was at Herringfleet on the 8th.
Nine flew north at Gunton Warren on the 17th.
Three flew south at Corton disused railtrack on the 23rd.



BULLFINCH Pyrrhula pyrrhula

One was along Gunton disused railtrack on the 27th.
One was at Gunton Meadow on the 31st.
One was at Kessingland sewage works on the 31st.



SNOW BUNTING Plectrophenax nivalis

Four were along Lowestoft North Beach on the 2nd to 7th.
Kessingland - 1st (7 on the beach), 2nd (14), 3rd (14), 14th (14), 5th (16), 6th (20), 7th (20 ), 8th (20), 9th (20), 10th (18), 11th (18), 18th (17), 19th (17), 20th (17), 21st (22), 22nd (22), 23rd (22), 24th (25), 25th (23), 28th (4), 29th (6), 30th (2).
Corton Beach - 9th (3 S), 31st (3 feeding along the cliff face).
Gunton Warren/Lowestoft North Beach - 10th (4).
Ness Point - 17th (one male was flying north along the coast over the sea).



LAPLAND BUNTING Calcarius lapponicus

One flew north along the cliffs at Corton on the 7th, it appeared to settle near Radar Lodge.
One arrived in off the sea south of Ness Point on the 10th.
One flew over Links Road car park on the 11th, the four local Snow Buntings joined it and they all flew north east out to sea. Ten minutes later the Snow Buntings returned on their own.
One was in the stubble field south of Radar Lodge at Corton on the 13th and 17th.



YELLOWHAMMER Emberiza citrinella

A pair were in the fields to the south of Pontins at Pakefield on the 13th and 22nd.



REED BUNTING Emberiza schoeniclus

One flew south over Corton new sewage works on the 4th.
Ten were at Kessingland Sluice on the 12th.
One was at Kessingland sewage works on the 13th.
Three were at Corton old sewage works on the 18th.
Two were at Radar Lodge, Corton on the 18th.
Three were along Breydon South Wall on the 18th.
One was at Kessingland sewage works on the 19th.
Two were at Kirkley Cemetery on the 22nd.
One was in the fields to the south of Pontins at Pakefield on the 22nd.
One was at Kessingland Beach on the 25th.
One was at Kessingland sewage works on the 27th.
Three were at Kessingland Beach on the 30th.

Ness Point - 2nd (2), 3rd (2+), 10th (2), 12th (1).
Kessingland - 1st (1 S), 5th (1 S).


CHINESE WATER DEER
One was at Whitecast Marsh, Carlton Marshes on the 19th.


WATER VOLE
One was seen at Beccles Common on the 29th.


Painted Lady butterflies were seen at the Bloodmoor Road bridge, and along Breydon South Wall on the 4th. A Hornet and a Peacock Butterfly were at Lound waterworks on the 4th.

Hornets
were still flying at Gunton and Corton Wood on the 8th. A Speckled Wood was at Hubbards Loke on the 8th, and a Peacock Butterfly was at Gunton Warren.

Small Copper and Common Blue butterflies were still flying at Gunton Wood on the 12th.

c.1000 Common Darters were around Waveney Forest on the 20th.

A Painted Lady was at Leathes Ham on the 23rd. A Small White butterfly was along Breydon South Wall on the 29th.
