BTO Bird Atlas - winter number 3At just past the halfway mark, and now into the third winter period, the BTO is once again asking for your bird records to help fill gaps in the maps of the BTO Bird Atlas.
Here in Suffolk many tetrads have been well covered to date, but there are still many gaps in the centre and the west of the County which need plugging. Can you help? Find the tetrads lacking coverage on the regional results section of the BTO Atlas website. In tetrads that have already been covered there will still be some species present but not yet recorded during visits, usually scarcer or nocturnal species. You can help by adding your roving records for any of these "missing" species when you find them.

DUSKY WARBLER Phylloscopus fuscatus
One was found at Gunton Warren on the afternoon of the 2nd, before disappearing up over the clifftop.
It was still present on the morning of the 3rd, initially on the slope by the second pillbox north of Warren House Wood before moving off up the slope and on to the top of the cliff near the third pillbox to the north. It remained around the Warren throughout the day apparently, but was rather elusive.
Again present on the 4th, 5th and 6th, when it was favouring the area between Warren House Wood and the Holm Oak copse to the north. Frustratingly elusive for much of the time when it is in the low vegetation, but when it ventures up into the trees it can give very good views.
Still present on the 7th when it was favouring the Holm Oak clump to the north of Warren House Wood, and again rather elusive.
It was very elusive on the 8th, not being seen until the afternoon, when it was in the birches above the Holm Oak clump to the north of Warren House Wood, and was then seen again in the Japanese Knotweed to the south. It seems to be calling less often now as well, so is even harder to locate than it has been previously.
On the 9th it was reported to have been seen further north on the opposite side of the road around the entrance to Corton Wood, and may also have been heard earlier around the Japanese Knotweed to the north of Warren House Wood.
