Launch of ‘In My View…’ Photography Competition

The ‘In My View …’ photo competition is a new year long, seasonal photo competition launching on Friday 2nd October. It is free to enter and open to everyone. The competition is organised by Sulwath Connections, Dumfries & Galloway Council and is sponsored by Jessops, so there are great prizes to win as well.

In My View ….’ is designed to encourage all ages to enjoy the great outdoors and demonstrate their creativity with a camera. We are looking for all that talent that exists and are particularly interested in innovative photography, with a different take on the natural environment.

Entries must focus on Dumfries & Galloway, but can depict almost any subject that fits the following categories; A Working Countryside, Enjoying the Outdoors, A Fresh Look at Nature.

For example, photographs could range from a gorgeous landscape shot to images showing the gritty realism of living and working in the countryside. They could include abstract ideas such as reflections and shadows or activities, such as show jumping or mountain bikers in action.

There is no limit to the number of photographs that can be entered into the competition and entering is easy. Just visit www.sulwathconnections.org.uk for ideas, entry details, prizes and to upload your images.

The Autumn deadline is Monday 30th November 2009.

The following seasonal deadlines are: Winter: 28th February 2010; Spring: 31st May 2010; Summer : 31st August 2010. A public vote for the overall winner will take place in September.

Winners will be announced in the press and on the website approximately two weeks after the closing date.

My name is Dawn Hamilton and I am the Volunteer Development Officer for MND Scotland, a small charity which provides support to people affected by motor neurone disease.  We are a small charity which relies on funding from our supporters as we don’t receive much in the way of statutory funding.  We are about to hold a brand new fundraising event in Falkirk Football Stadium on Friday 12 March 2010.  We are holding a sponsored firewalk with participants walking across 20 feet of burning embers.  Registration begins at 6.30pm with training beginning at 7.00pm until 9.00pm.  The actual event itself will begin at 9.00 and probably finish just after 9.30pm.

We are looking for a volunteer photographer who would be willing to take photos of the participants during their training and of the actual event itself.  The photographer should be able capable of taking outdoor night shots during winter of the participants as they make their way across the embers.

We hope to be able to use these photos to firstly raise funds and sell the photos to the participants and secondly to raise awareness of the activities that the charity has done.

The volunteer photographer would be entitled to their travel expenses of 40p per mile and any costs associated with the photography.  They will also have something different for their portfolio.

I would be grateful if you could perhaps pass this onto to your members and ask if someone is willing to help us.  I appreciate that the event isn’t until next year, but we have to begin the planning process early.

I can be contacted at dawn.hamilton@mndscotland.org.uk or 0141 945 1077.

GDPU Delegates Meeting 6th October 09

The Digital Salon entry for this year consisted of a very high standard of photography, which received entries from all over the UK and several countries abroad. There was a disappointing entry from Scotland and in particular GDPU clubs, whilst the standard of entries was high it is thought that there are Scottish photographers who could provide images to this standard.

The image league final will be held on 6th April 2010 in East Kilbride and will be judged by Peter Paterson, from Stirling.

GDPU youth hostel weekends, the next one which is fully booked is on Friday 30th October at Uig on Skye, there is no definite booking for a February weekend as there are problems securing a youth hostel at this time. The next confirmed weekend is 6th November 2010 which will be at Cairngorm Hostel, Aviemore.

The GDPU will be holding a workshop for anyone interested in becoming a GDPU judge, this is necessary as over the next few years due to present judges retiring there is going to be a shortage of judges, and members of GDPU clubs are encouraged to seek members interested in becoming judges.

The annual print exhibition which is held in Princess Square, Glasgow may be looking for an alternative location due to refurbishment planned for Princess Square.

Due to the present situation in the world there is a lot of uncertainty with regards to the legality of taking pictures in public places and the police powers in relation to photographers in such situations, for further documentation relating to this subject, use the following link Manifesto Club.

Further information on any of the above can be found on the GDPU web site.

GDPU AGM Notes 2009
The 2009 GDPU AGM was held in the Arts Centre in East Kilbride on Tuesday 21st April 2009.
The following member were nominated and approved:
Chairperson - Stan Miller
Vice Chairperson - Hazel Gordon
Secretary - Position Still Vacant
Treasurer - Lorna McDonald

There is a shortcoming of committee members and the new members of the committee have asked if anyone from any of the member clubs would be willing to join the committee. If so please let your GDPU Delegate know (Lindsay Kyle).

There was also concerns raised that the forthcoming Judges workshop was going to be cancelled as there has been no entries for this. The member clubs asked for it not to be cancelled as one club had some member who were willing to attend. If anyone wishes to attend further details can be obtained on the GDPU web site click here

Some changes were proposed to the Image League Judge Selection rules, these were approved and will be amended accordingly. Feedback on the first digital slide league has been very positive.
The general message from the GDPU committee was that there is a lack of people to volunteer for events and it seems to be the same few members who time and again seem to keep things going. The GDPU are looking for more support from member clubs - more information will be published on this as and when events are being run.
If you have any comments or feedback - please speak to your GDPU Delegate.

GDPU Delegates Meeting 20th October 2008

The following persons are no longer judging or lecturing for the GDPU :-

  • R Graham
  • D McIntyre
  • I Davidson
  • B Copeland (after April 2009 as he is retiring)

The GDPU has asked if any clubs were interested in sending in 3 images from their club that could be placed on the GDPU web site alongside the details of that particular club, perhaps one image at a time , rotating these through the year, another option is for a club to submit a gallery of images with short script for each image and this could be added to the GDPU web site.

A couple of programs which were recommended are :-

  • Faststone Viewer     Free download and useful for running competitions with a number of club entries
  • Discentra                   A program which can be used to display images at competitions and demonstrate subtle changes that can be made to the images ie brightness, hue & saturation etc, this can be purchased and there is a discount for all GDPU clubs.
